We ate our sandwiches in silence, and I let my imagination have its head between sips of barely-cool Dr. Pepper. If I subtracted everything that had happened since we met—and ignored what had happened with Rowan in the alley—I could almost pretend we were on a date. The math was simple—sandwiches outdoors after dark with a hot guy? We were basically having a moonlit picnic, mausoleum or not. Of course, once I had let my imagination out to play, it didn’t want to stop. Sitting so close to Cyrus, I could smell the faintest hint of my own soap on his skin, mellowed out by time into something warm and mysterious that I suspected was a clue as to what kissing that marble-pale skin might taste like. With the necromancer close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off his body, I couldn’t help remembering how he’d held me tight against him, and how his large hand had been hot and firm over my mouth, keeping me quiet in the shadows. I couldn’t appreciate it at the time, too busy enduring the unexpected agony of watching Rowan walk away to protect us—to protect me—but I did now. My mind immediately jumped to what it might be like to have Cyrus hold me like that again, his strong body like a shield over mine as his gentle hands— This is bad, I told myself, wiping my hands on the parts of my jeans that weren’t covered in dust. First sock done for my wife’s Valentine’s Day present!! I love the candy-hearts vibes of Beach Bum by Twisted Ambitions Yarn. Pattern is Tadpoles by Jenna Swanson (free on Ravelry, and my go-to sock pattern). I actually have it memorized after nearly 15 years of knitting socks!

Cyrus vanished behind a swirl of shadows. Over Rowan’s shoulder I spotted a rusted fire escape dangling over the alleyway. If he jumped on the dumpster, he could make it. “Row, you have to get out of here, hide on the roof—” “And what do we have here?” A voice came from the far end of the alley. I saw the decision on Rowan’s face a split second before he grabbed me by the front of my shirt and pulled me into a kiss, backing me deeper into the shadows. The force of it stole my breath. Or, more realistically, what stole my breath was being pinned against the summer-warm brick by one Officer Rowan Swift. We had kissed, once, when we were teenagers. This, though? It was nothing like I remembered. The beard was new, which grounded me in the present. Rowan’s tongue slipped out to taste me, the gentlest, most curious brush against my lower lip, and I gasped at the unexpected touch, promptly forgetting all about the voices coming down the alley toward us as Rowan deepened our kiss. I was a lost cause. I melted, helpless against my greatest weakness. I was dimly aware of a moan escaping my throat, muffled by his lips on mine, and the answering groan Rowan echoed sent sparks spiraling up from the pit of my stomach. I was burning up from the inside out, chest aching with the bonfire growing within my ribcage. No. I had forgotten to breathe. I inhaled through my nose, unwilling to back away, but Rowan broke the kiss. I stifled the involuntary noise of disappointment in the back of my throat, only for it to transmute into a breathy sound of surprise as Rowan kissed his way to my ear. “How many?” He whispered, lips brushing my earlobe. “Tap me.”
