Wait. Black opium? I wear that. It…predictably…does not look like drugs. It looks exactly like what it is. So, not stupidity.

A reply says, “I condemn the violence that has taken place. I am praying for everyone affected by this, but it is not appropriate to call Mormons our brothers and sisters.” An initial Tweet says, “If your response to a LDS church being shot up and burnt down is “BuT MoRmOnS aReN’T ChRiStiAnS!” …you’ve lost the plot. I personally would like places of worship to stop being violently attacked regardless of whether I agree with their beliefs or not.” A reply says, “I disagree. Mormons using this tragedy to insert themselves into the Christian realm is dishonest and we have a right to clarify that there’s no fellowship between our churches. It’s not a minor theological dispute. The shooting is obviously evil, but the entire LDS church needs to repent lest they face damnation.” A response from another user says, “Super disrespectful time to post this.” The user replies, “Pretty disrespectful to pretend Mormons are Christians and won’t face damnation when they die. Love isn’t always rainbows and butterflies. The harsh reality is that the Mormon murdered is more than likely at the front end of eternal damnation.”

Interest peaked around July 24 and has decreased mostly steadily since then. It is, at all times, higher than the line depicting search interest in Harry Enten.

Yes! This is soooo nerdy, but one of my favorite theories of any kind is all about this. Our society believes groups deserve certain kinds of benefits and burdens based on how we perceive the group. Only policies that align with those beliefs are likely to gain broad support.

The figure shows a cube that illustrates three dimensions of this question. The first dimension is power (weak vs strong). The second is constructions (positive vs negative). The third is benefits vs burdens. The advantaged group (those with positive social construction and power) have high control of the policy agenda. Benefits are oversubscribed and burdens are undersubscribed in this group. The contender group (those with negative social constructions but who have power) have low control. Benefits are sub rosa and burdens are symbolic and overt in this group. The dependent group (those with positive social construction but who lack power) have low control. Benefits are undersubscribed and burdens are oversubscribed in this group. The deviant group (those with negative social constructions and who lack power) have no control.
