This is the endemic #Bottlebee #Melipona lautipes, on a #Tridax #daisy. It's from #Montserrat in the #Caribbean. It's pouring with rain, so I'm posting a summery #sciart #insect #illustration

They have no sting, are fluffy and friendly, and make nests in the shape of bottles. What's not to love?

It's curved over the disc florets, gathering pollen. It's antennae are curled forward, giving her an inquisitive air. the scrappy looking Tridax daisy has white petals and bright yellow central florets. The Angerona hairstreak or Bronze hairstreak Electrostrymon angerona Butterfly, on a Tridax daisy. The nuances of the oranges, blues, and mottled blacks are hard to untangle, but make for beautiful markings. You can see them blending on tge lower wings which are held closed. The upper wings has less markings. This Butterfly is found in Montserrat and Dominica, along with other islands in the lesser Antilles, where it is endemic. These are Red-rumped #agouti #Dasyprocta leporina nobelie, completed for the National trust of Montserrat. They fill the same ecological niche as rabbits, grazing on grass & fruit. As ever, my #sciart #naturalhistoryillustrations end up having distinct (& usually irritable) expressions. * Sigh *

His foot is extended and depsite my efforts not to give him an expression, he has a frightened yet hopeful expression. The other agouti looks tired and sullen, and is holding a half eaten fruit. She is sitting on her haunches. Both have much oranger bums than the rest of their fur which is a mousey brownish purple colour, with paler bellys and darker legs. Close up of the irritable and tired agouti. You can see the watercoloour brush strokes and the simple approach to getting shine in the eye (leave two spots of paper as white). The chin is pale. Ears are rounded and a brown pink. The agouti has many whiskers. The last sentence sounds like something from a badly translated phrase book, apologies. Close up of the eager frightened agouti. Again, you can see the different coloured brush strokes, white chest, large eyes (prey species) and rounded ears. Fur is orangish brown with a white chin and chest. Eyes are chestnut brown. As with the other close up, this agouti is also in possession of a fine set of whiskers, including a few exciting ones which emerge from the eyebrow region.

Well,that's this week done.

I managed to knock out 16 watercolours in 1 week. Very pleased,relieved, & surprised.

They're all animals from Montserrat, and include several endemic species; they're a mix of mammals, birds, insects, & reptiles/amphibs

This is Purple #toadflax #Linaria purpurea, it's a common enough plant, but one that benefits from a closer look.

Like most wild flowers, the closer you look, the more amazing details and structure, not to mention nuances of colour, you see.

This is a sprig of #Silverbirch #Betula pendula I painted years ago

I was messing about on photoshop, and just like the way it looked with unattached leaves.

Something as inconspicuous as a twig with #leaves can make a really interesting and challenging subject.

This is my #sciart #illustration of a #Darkgreenfritillary #butterfly #Argynnis (or #Speyeria) aglaja.

They have orange upper wings, the green is only on the underside (with by silvery spots)

The food plant is pansies & violets. They're strong fliers, so can be hard to see clearly unless at rest.

Painting this insect is a real treat as the colours are so vivid.

The species name is urticae (nettle) because the caterpillars often feed on stinging nettle.

Small tortoiseshell buttefly cut to white. This insect has a brown central body, orangish eyes, and striped antenaae (black and white) with orange tips. The wings are brown, deep orange, fade to areas of bright yellow before hitting the outer margin/ The top wings have a dash of white. the rest are all deep orange until they hit the black cresents which border glowing turquoise blue semi circles along the upper and lower wing edges. Beyond these is a thin black line, then a thin brown line, then a white edge cut through with the veins that support the wing and come out diagonally from the thorax to the wing edge. Top corner is dark brown black, then there is an area of yellows and golds that blends into orange which gets darker towards the wing edge. It hits scalloped black edges which enclose bright sky blue patches of colour. Then another black stripe, a brown line, and the white wing edge. Painting this insect is a real treat as the colours are so vivid. I love the way the blue areas look against the orange, they almost glow. This is probably because the colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel. #sciart Another detail of the Small tortoiseshell wing, this time tthe top of the top left wing, part of the margin above the costa. Deep oranges are cut across with solid black bands, and two little black spots. there are areas of light bright yellow at the edges of the black bands. This is the #Chinese #bramble #Rubus tricolor, completed for The Field Studies Council. It appears on the #Urbanplants of Scotland fold our chart, on sale through FSCs website.

I loved illustrating the textured leaves and shiny berries.

Sepals are recurved. Each drupelet has a residual stamen which has withered to a thin brown line with a terminal dot (the anther as was). The unripe berry is smaller and more orange and it's red-haired sepals are still touching the fruit, not having recurved yet.

It's the flowering head, at a diagonal from bottom left to upper right. The flowering panicle is a froth of mauve flowers with orange eyes, and there are 2 lesser conical shaped infloresceces below the main one, One pair of leaves are illustrated, with damage from pests shown as holes ringed brown. This is the #foxglove #digitalis. It's one flower, taken from the flowering spike. You cna see the calyx at the top, then the magenta tube-like corolla. The mouth of the flower points downward, but you can see pale yellow stamens protruding and the distinctive dark purple splotches within the flower throat, ringed with white. This is the Greater #plantain. Its based on the rosette of basal leaves, with two emergent flowering spikes, thin and green. The leaves are broad and have almost parallel veins (paler) running their length. The mid rib is also pale, and has thin green wings; this constitutes the petiole. the top of the infloresence shows greenish buds, half way down there's a froth of pale mauve stamens, and below you see the tiny flowers developing into seeds, still green on this spike. The other spike shows completed flowering and the developing fruits are tinged brown. At the bottom right corner is a close up of an individual flower showing mauve stamens, a bright yellow stigma, and 3 cream tiny petals. This is the #loousewort. it used to be in the #scrophularaea family, which has now rolled into the plantian family. the illustration shows the deeply divided leaves, an off yellowish green, coming out from a central base. there's a long pale root at the bottom of the plant. Three of the upper branches bear flowers. these are mauve magenta. They are similar to mint flowers, having a hooded tube and basal wings. Calyx are swollen and tinged reddish. On the far right is a branch bearing three buds. The calyx teeth recurve, showing contrasting green inner edges.
