I love all the incredible plants & animals I get to illustrate in pen, pencil, and watercolour.

Been painting nature for over 30 years & totally love it.
The third of my workshops next year is a day long session drawing and learning about grasses. Click on the link to book:

This is the endemic #Bottlebee #Melipona lautipes, on a #Tridax #daisy. It's from #Montserrat in the #Caribbean. It's pouring with rain, so I'm posting a summery #sciart #insect #illustration

They have no sting, are fluffy and friendly, and make nests in the shape of bottles. What's not to love?

This is the Angerona #hairstreak or #Electrostrymon angerona Butterfly, on a Tridax daisy.

This Butterfly is found in Montserrat & is one of a series of illustrations completed for the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum (Montserrat)

These are Red-rumped #agouti #Dasyprocta leporina nobelie, completed for the National trust of Montserrat. They fill the same ecological niche as rabbits, grazing on grass & fruit. As ever, my #sciart #naturalhistoryillustrations end up having distinct (& usually irritable) expressions. * Sigh *

A question for #botany peeps.

Which #wildflowers have widest global distribution?

Looking for spc which grow in Asia, Europe, Americas (&Africa & Australasia too?) for a #botanicalillustration project

Suggestions please!

Well,that's this week done.

I managed to knock out 16 watercolours in 1 week. Very pleased, relieved, & surprised.

They're all animals from Montserrat, and include several endemic species; they're a mix of mammals, birds, insects, & reptiles/amphibs

Had a excellent weekend painting a #botanicalillustration of a penny bun #boletus edulis #Fungi & a Rosy button one, and chatting to Fungitown visitors in Hay. My mate filmed me at work in a borrowed (appropriately themed) shirt. #sciart

Had an amazing day at #Fungitown in #HayonWye today, sat upstairs painting this gorgeous pink-flushed Rosy bonnet #mushroom, Mycena rosea.

So many fascinating people to talk to , and so much sharing of #fungal inspiration and ideas. A privilege to be there

Come and say hi

This is Purple #toadflax #Linaria purpurea, it's a common enough plant, but one that benefits from a closer look.

Like most wild flowers, the closer you look, the more amazing details and structure, not to mention nuances of colour, you see.

This is a sprig of #Silverbirch #Betula pendula I painted years ago

I was messing about on photoshop, and just like the way it looked with unattached leaves.

Something as inconspicuous as a twig with #leaves can make a really interesting and challenging subject.

This is the #Adonisblue #Polyommatus bellargus #butterfly. The #insect is an incredible glowing blue, and seeing them in life (in France) was an amazing treat. This #sciart #naturalscienceillustration was completed for a #packagingdesign on chinaware

This is my #sciart #illustration of a #Darkgreenfritillary #butterfly #Argynnis (or #Speyeria) aglaja.

They have orange upper wings, the green is only on the underside (with by silvery spots)

The food plant is pansies & violets. They're strong fliers, so can be hard to see clearly unless at rest.

This is the #PaintedLady #butterfly, #Vanessacardui.

They're visitors in the US, and are common in Europe. They're amazing migrants, covering enormous distances

completed for use on a chinaware design.

I illustrated these #honeybees last week for a chinaware company

Sorting out fur from stripe, wing vein position, and antennal segments is always tricky; but trying to be accurate matters

Loved this job, a joy to spend some quality time with #Apismellifera

This #smalltortoiseshell #butterfly, #Aglais urticae.
is a commission for a chinaware company.

Painting this insect is a real treat as the colours are so vivid.

The species name is urticae (nettle) because the caterpillars often feed on stinging nettle.

This is the #Chinese #bramble #Rubus tricolor, completed for The Field Studies Council. It appears on the #Urbanplants of Scotland fold our chart, on sale through FSCs website.

I loved illustrating the textured leaves and shiny berries.

New blog on #wildflower #families out:

lizzieharper.co.uk/2025/06/wild...

This one is on the varied (& recently re-jigged) #plantain family, #plantaginaceae. With my #botanicalillustrations, it discusses common features of flowers as diverse as foxgloves, speedwell, & plantains. One of a series.
