In the UK, people wear poppies for it and have two minutes of silence at 11 am for it. I think it’s a public holiday in France. It’s actually really interesting to see how many countries celebrate that day because World War 1 affected so many countries.

So yes they have evolved to the two days to be different but both were based on remembering great wars that killed many people and to be more than just their respective wars after World War II.

Veterans day specifically evolved out of Armistice day—at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month the armistice was signed and ended World War I. The UK and the commonwealth call it Remembrance Day. Many other countries celebrate their veterans on this day. Memorial Day was for civil war.
