Thread on flu facts:
Flu kills healthy kids and young adults every year, like Brent Teichman, who died at age 29. Flu killed 281 American kids last year, the most in 15 years. 89% of deaths were in unvaccinated kids; 44% of kids <18 who died from flu last year were previously healthy.

Jeb Teichman’s phone rang just before midnight. As a pediatrician, he has received many late-night emergency calls.

This time, the call was about his 29-year-old son.

Brent’s only risk factor for severe flu was that he hadn’t received a flu shot. His parents reminded Brent, 29, to get his flu shot a couple of weeks before his passing. Brent “said he had it on to-do list, but he just never got around to it.”

Tylenol use in pregnancy has gone down even as autism rates have risen. The two aren't even correlated in time. There's just no definitive evidence that Tylenol causes autism.

CDC presented this safety data for hepatitis B vaccine. #ACIP

Anti-vaccine activists often “elevate one flawed study, ignore millions of children in rigorous databases, manufacture doubt,” @jakescottmd.bsky.social told me. The ACIP chair is highlighting one study w/ a higher mortality rate. But two other studies found no difference in mortality.

ACIP is debating why we vaccinate all babies against hepatitis B at birth?
The CDC also presented this slide about a baby who wasn't vaccinated against hep B until age 2.5 months. The baby died of an overwhelming infection at 3 months. #ACIP

"When widespread birth dose of vaccination was initiated in Taiwan, it was associated with a steep decrease, if not elimination, of liver cancer and cirrhosis due to hepatitis B amongst people born after the national vaccination program," Dr. Elliot Tapper of University of Michigan told me.

CDC staff says the decline in hepatitis B cases in young adults is because of the birth cohort effects. Babies have been vaccinated at birth since 1991. So some of those babies are in their 30s. #ACIP

CDC staff says the hepatitis B vaccine, given at birth, is safe and effective at preventing the disease in children, based on 17 studies. #ACIP

Most countries do a much better job of screening pregnant women for hepatitis B. In the U.S., up to 14% of pregnant women are not screened. That makes skipping the birth dose of hepatitis B dangerous, because doctors don't really know which moms have the virus. #ACIP

Most of the world recommends a universal birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine, because that's when it's most effective. Babies need to be vaccinated within hours of birth to avoid being infected during delivery. #ACIP

The CDC presents the benefits/risks of administering the hepatitis B vaccine and the risk/dangers of revoking the recommendation. Serious side effects like life-threatening allergic reactions occur only one in 1 million doses.
