Night Heron
Liz Brownlee

Night heron unhooks
his hunch to seek
lucent-eyed fish
dark blind and sleek

precise as starlight
steps the creek
sharp, crimson eyes
with black, knife beak

reflectionless
he’ll slice the deep
fish stunned then
swallowed, still asleep.
