I don't doubt he has gotten some donations; I'm doubting that he'll actually pay the bill because he is known to stiff contractors and hold on to his money.

Is it possible the rallying behind Kimmel and First amendment issues were also helped by Tr*mp-friendly influencers who depend on the First amendment to spew their propaganda? I know a lot of them spoke up.

Exactly: misinformation combined with either laziness or hectic lifestyles keeps people out of the loop. Getting factual information in the sea of right leaning media takes work.
