I don't get to see wall brown butterflies locally very often, so really pleased to find one at Old Hall Marshes today. (Also small copper, common blue, small heath; & lackey moth caterpillar).

After nice sunny days, today was a chilly shock to the system! but we had some excellent birding at Upper Hollesley Common & Hollesley Marshes. Highlights included dartford warbler, woodlark, redstart, yellowhammer, stonechat; spoonbill, wood sandpiper, little ringed plover, marsh harrier, and more.

Star bird was a female red footed falcon on our guided walk at Abberton Reservoir, but add in spoonbill, cattle egret, hobby, red kite, greenshank, common sandpiper, common tern, swift, nightingale, willow warbler, cuckoo .... all added up to a wonderful morning. #essexbirding

The early start was worth it for our 'dawn-ish' chorus walk at Cockaynes Wood this morning. Highlights included nightingale, cuckoo, garden & reed warblers, common tern, whimbrel, red kite, buzzard, yellowhammer, swallow, Egyptian goose .... as well as various wildflowers. #essexbirding

Fantastic morning for our wildlife boat trip round the Walton Backwaters. Highlights included pale bellied brent, marsh harrier, avocet, golden plover, lapwing, oystercatcher, pintail, wigeon, teal, common seal .... And all on calm waters with blue sky and sunshine. Just beautiful! #essexbirding

Not the best weather, but a great day birding around Aldeburgh (North Warren, Thorpeness Meare, Town Marshes). Highlights included barnacle, white fronted & Egyptian geese, wigeon, pintail, gadwall, goosander, common scoter, stonechat, great white egret, Chinese water deer, common seal .....

A memorable afternoon guiding at Copt Hall (horizontal rain with hail wasn't in any of the forecasts I looked at!!), but we got a good bird list - marsh harrier, common buzzard, brent geese (incl one pale bellied), curlew, Mediterranean gull, short eared owl, snipe, fieldfare, kestrel, barn owl ....

Guiding day at Fingringhoe Wick was made more challenging by the fog, but we enjoyed some great birding. Star bird was a male hen harrier, while other highlights included red throated diver, red breasted merganser, marsh harrier, avocet, green sandpiper, Cetti's warbler .... #essexbirding

Fabulous weather for guiding at Minsmere yesterday. Birding was pretty good too! Highlights included marsh harrier, bittern, bearded tit, marsh tit, whooper swan, avocet, shoveler, pintail, gadwall, water pipit, Caspian gull, treecreeper, siskin, stonechat and a rather late swallow. A brilliant day.

Rather misty for this morning's guided walk at Landguard Point, but great to witness bird migration in action with groups of brent geese, wigeon, redwing & swallow heading S. Also influx of robins & blackbirds. Surprise sighting was 9 Egyptian geese disappearing into the mist!
