I am deeply moved by the scholars and activists who devote themselves to making sure that people who use drugs and people with chronic pain are treated with care and respect, not cruelty and punishment. I hope that my work can make some small difference in this fight.

I am grateful to the selection committees and I am especially grateful to the 337 professionals who talked with me about their work over a decade. This work is about their struggles and about the citizens/clients they serve. 2/3
