YES! I feel like you called this early too! This is such an interesting aspect of NLMG #367britlit
MT: In Never Let Me Go, creativity equals currency which represents the extent and weight of capitalism in present day society as new industries emerge.

Okwe is offput by the immoral, natural behavior of city life. Immoral scenes have an orange colorgrading, green is neutral, and blue is righteous, which mostly occurs in scenes where Okwe is alone. #367britlit

MT: Barry admires Stephen's apartment, thinking about the future he could have. The apartment's combination of wood and metal symbolizes how although things may not seem like they should go together, they can coincide beautifully, referencing Barry's internal thoughts on homosexuality. #367britlit

MT: Presumably, life goes on as before after the death of Milkman. We see this often in real life where the immediate threat is gone, so we can assume all is well. But middle sister now has a plethora of trauma and psychological torment to work through, so life does not go on as before. #367britlit

I feel like the political/societal climate in Milkman is really similar to a lot of what we experience (at least in the Midwest). #367britlit

MT: NLMG helps readers grasp disheveled systems similar to ones we have in real life. In this story, clones are created to be used. Similarly, Americans are born into the system to work. We ask why the main characters don't revolt, when they may be asking us the same about our reality. #367britlit

#367britlit I have a hard time wrapping my head around the students accepting that they're destined to be donors without push back. What if they sailed away on the boat and lived full lives together? They don't seem to think about leaving as an option. Maybe the Hailsham brainwash is too strong? Idk
January 28, 2025 at 7:05 PM
#367britlit MT: The way that the students of Hailsham learn about dark realities when they are just a little too young to fully understand is similar to us learning about dark realities (such as the Holocaust) when we are very young, before we even understand how the world works.

#367Britlit I love the early foreshadowing of Kathy's personality and how she would become a carer. For example, her ability to notice, caring about Tommy's shirt, how he is teased, reassuring him but only to a certain extent (she says she knows the line between listening and ignoring patients).

"...once she remembered trying to box her own ears for having cheated herself in a game of croquet she was playing against herself, for this curious child was very fond of pretending to be two people." I love how complex Alice is, she's so honest yet immature/curious. She's well rounded. #367britlit
