Why do all the Catholic churches in West Virginia have this particular energy?
Simple white wooden church with a steeple next to a railroad crossing. Stone brick church with three stained glass windows - incredibly small. Another simple wooden church. Fancy car parked in front. Catholic church that is obviously converted from a barnhouse.

The events of the last week or so have repeatedly brought me back to Butler's discussion of vulnerability and mourning in Precarious Life.
A vulnerability must be perceived and recognized in order to come into play in an ethical encounter, and there is no guarantee that this will happen. Not only is there always the possibility that a vulnerability will be recognized and that it will be constituted as the "unrecognizable," but when a vulnerability is recognized, that recognition has the power to change the meaning and structure of the vulnerability itself. In this sense, if vulnerability is one precondition for humanization, and humanization takes place differently through variable norms of recognition, then it follows that vulnerability is fundamentally dependent on existing norms of recognition if it is to be attributed to any human subject. If violence is done against those who are unreal, then, from the perspective of violence, it fails to injure or negate those lives since those lives are already negated. But they have a strange way of remaining animated and so must be negated again (and again). They cannot be mourned because they are always already lost or, rather, never "were," and they must be killed, since they seem to live on, stubbornly, in this state of deadness. Violence renews itself in the face of the apparent inexhaustibility of its object.
