There are limitless factors in language itself because it is ever-changing(aka there are too many things that do not follow the rules for the process of translation to be automated yet). I'm not as deep in the field to see how linguists take part in building these language models.

It's fair to say that linguists/translators/interpreters don't want their jobs being stolen by machines. Machines are powerful they can do a lot of things but I fail to see the flexibility in them. In the end we are the ones telling them what to do and what is wrong or not.

Most Machine Translations rate by different metrics like BLEU, or MQM or other things but to me it feels like a totally different field as if they were not from the same root. I started to ask myself why these tools we see are not built by linguists but instead engineers.
