Roger Morris, "Taken For Granted" (1972)

Morris offers a take on Levon's squawk, with accordion that attempts Garth. Sometimes I get this song stuck in my head and can't remember which Band album it's on. The whole thing sounds like it was recorded under a blanket.

Eggs Over Easy, "Party Party" (1972)

I prefer the charming acoustic ballad "Arkansas" that follows this song, but this song fills in the full sound better. A little too slick, perhaps, but echoes some of the Band's groovier cuts.

Bobby Charles, "Small Town Talk" (1972)

This one is definitely cheating, because every member of the Band except Robbie Robertson plays on this album, but it's too great too pass by without mention.

Daniel Moore, "May 16, 1975" (1971)

Listen to this one on something with good low end because the bass is bone-vibratingly awesome. The rest of the album is solid, but this track is a phenomenon. Possibly the best "I can't believe it's not the Band" song.

Clover, "Mr. Moon" (1971)

Album opener "Harvest" is also great, but I love the soulful vocal, catchy melody, and crisp drumming on "Mr. Moon," one of my fav not-Band songs. Album has moments of silliness ("Chicken Butt") that distract, but a solid effort overall.

Goose Creek Symphony, "Satisfied Mind" (1970)

The jawharp on this album gets a little "froggy goes a-courting" at times, while the song structures get a bit proggy at others. The cover of Red Hayes & Jack Rhodes's country standard feels a bit Rick Danko at least.

I'm going to skip albums by better-known bands (Workingman's Dead, Deja Vu, Moby Grape) because these bands have legacies that are broader than following in the Band's wake. Here are six songs that I think are all great, for different reasons, even if none of them quite equal their inspiration.
