I always like to encourage folks to visit Kameoka, which is just west of Kyoto proper. The hills along the river are beautiful this time of year.

You should also keep your passport handy--Though not a constant interaction, you may be asked by the police to show it to prove you're not overstaying a visa.
Some restaurants will turn you away for being foreign; lacking English menus or to preserve a certain atmosphere you may not understand.

Don't be surprised if you attempt to approach someone and use english to ask for assistance, only for them to excuse themselves and leave. Knowing some basic phrases if you don't speak Japanese can be useful, or you can use a translation app in a pinch.

That's a great question, and the answer varies with the definition of "good" we have in mind, here. In general though, my cat seems to qualify. :)

I've weighed having an avi made for streams, but I'm not really sure I stream enough to really get into it. ^^
