Fern is our feral. She was tiny when she showed up. She patrols the yard and keeps it free of critters, with occasional offering at the stoop.

A favorite cartoon of mine since childhood, along with a favorite quote that comes to mind more in my adulthood as incredible/impossible situations present themselves, or are presented, where they are so far over my head, or fun, or seemingly random, that I want to put on my beret (and but it has wool in it and makes my head feel hot) and the search for a summertime beret (which I will do in Charleston later this month while on vacation), and do fun stuff like this. BTW, I sort of apologize for the use of the word “which,” which is a Thurber no-no (Damn it!), and for the use of adverbs.

Ferny Ferny Fern, or just “Fern,” a wonderful petite feral cat turned in-and-outdoors who is smart and super sweet and who communicates with trill, mouth, and claw, and who rules the yard with an iron paw (and we have the rodent graveyard to prove it), and who is playful and aloof AF, loves laps in the evenings as much as we love her.

One of my good friends sent this to me, as a reminder of our group from college. That same group is also our book club, and magnet in the corner is what we earn if we are the only one in the group who read the assigned book! (Feel free to read the Alt text to learn more.)

Commander Riker has the most chips, partly because he is good at bluffing. In the corner of the image is a small refrigerator magnet with the image of a tree and the words, “The Lowcountry of South Carolina,” a prize given to members of a the Kitchin 109 Book Club when they are the only one who read an assigned book. This magnet is used because Dave Olson, the star of Charlie Vargas freshman 8mm film, The Immortaliy of Dave,” was the only one who read the book, Low Country at High Tide, and he kept saying “low country for old men, because it sounded like the movie “No Country for Old Men.” Charlie thought that was funny, so he ordered this magnet to signify the achievement; but to be honest the book in question read more like a doctorate thesis (and may well have been) so he and the others in the group didn’t make it through the first chapter. But Dave’s wife had a doctorate in wetlands geography, or something like that, and given their history of previous book clubs, they likely read it in parts to each other in bad at night, a fear worth commemorating for sure, and was keynote of something more like the Nobel or Oscar, or something. Anyway, we are now reading “Orbital,” but we don’t have a date set in part b/c setting a date for this group is as hard as setting a date for anything that invoked 5 busy professionals (ENT specialist, clinical psychologist, pharmacist, SNFist, and the other is unknown b/c she is the most recent member, and I don’t know what she does.
