Copyright librarian. Expect much fangirling about books, theatre and Shakespeare here.
I get the fear, pre licence change there was no good solution and we got very lucky with circumstances at LBU that we felt able to lobby the CLA about the licence. That being said, I’m excited for when people start using the licence clause: a few folks post-conference promised to email me about it

Based on observation (this presentation at 3 conferences), people were either unaware of the CLA licence change or just really reluctant to talk about them: UCLAN (Uni of Lancashire now) are the only others with a process that I know of and we’ve really benefited from swapping best practice

All credit to @odreamland.bsky.social for incredible image creation - we may have had far too much fun putting our presentation into film noir speak!

What's next? Good foundation: university position, AI policies, AI literacy. Procure responsible tools, deploy them with the right users, enable AI use. A good AI strategy or build AI into your existing approach. AI challenges a lot of sacred library principles, need to be prepared to talk about it.

UK HE Libraries emerging picture: significant library involvement in supporting others using AI; hugely uneven approach to tool adoption; "cutting edge" adopters, with large scale AI projects
December 3, 2025 at 4:02 PM
Future planned work: working more closely with the community of interest group in AI and Information Literacy; Fantastic Futures 2025, conference on AI and libraries/archives use; 2026 SCONUL Technology Survey, look at rate of AI adoption; crossover work with other agencies e.g. JISC

Now they're running some associated webinars, deep dives into specific subjects. Also having supplier strategic conversations, seeing what's going on with our suppliers with a more centralised view.
December 3, 2025 at 3:54 PM
SCONUL is really helping on this front, have an AI strategy group. They run AI coffee mornings: signature event for the group, have hit 200 people but usually about 80. Those have been running for about a year and a half.

We're into the hundreds with AI product releases, the market is deeply crowded. Also embedded AI e.g. SCOPUS. As a sector, we need a plan to work through this.

Local use case: University of Manchester. Blog post on this specific topic. Published their strategic priorities. Launched the Office of Open Research in 2022. Strategically coordinates the university's response to the open research agenda, all under the library's auspices.

Outdated narratives hurt libraries, we need to rewrite the story proactively. Emphasise expertise, use data-driven storytelling. We're more than just books!
December 3, 2025 at 3:35 PM
Libraries can't do it themselves, strategic partnerships are essential. Different skills, also single point of contact for researchers.
December 3, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Library has so many skills relevant to this new situation and the institution e.g. metadata management. But also focus on libraries as keepers of knowledge.
December 3, 2025 at 3:33 PM
Library Beyond the Library framework, three parts. Strategy: what services does the library need to provide to connect to institutional strategy? Collaboration: who do we need to work with to make it happen? Stories: how do we tell that narrative?
December 3, 2025 at 3:31 PM
Library value proposition is evolving, becoming increasingly complex, increasing provision of research support.
December 3, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Story started with a US university, Office of Research launches a new Open Science initiative. They were unaware of the library's offerings. Happy ending (library are now one of the main stakeholders), but a common thread of academics not being aware of the library's role outside books.

Impact - 12,500 hits! Positive qualitative feedback from librarians, asked for advice by other initiatives on creating information resources. Project funding ends in the next few years, much as they have server space for the next few years - who will maintain it long-term?

In some ways, a limited perspective, just two UK people. Tried to fix this by sharing it with OA groups based in other areas, got lots of feedback along the way about things which were more regionally specific. Nevertheless they struggled to find many OA resources not in English
December 3, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Where to host? Very important that it was open source, chose Bookstack. Create a taxonomy of resources. Check for accessibility and design for use of ease.

Setting parameters: books focused, open access, not about BPCs or transitional agreements, not about specific publishers, aimed primarily at publishers but should be useful for everyone.

"An international partnership building open, community-owned systems and infrastructures".
Started from them being overwhelmed by the number of open access resources out there: if they were overwhelmed and they work in OA, academics definitely were
