Hello (IPv6) world!

This is my sub-account for #IPv6 and related things. My main account is @litchralee

In a lot of ways, it's refreshing when a netif links up but doesn't auto-start an L3 protocol, unless explicitly requested. IMO, it thoroughly sidesteps the question of whether to start with Legacy IP, #ipv6, or dual-stack, and it's up to the admin to configure the network correctly.

Naturally […]

It seems my first NIC requires fetching a Realtek driver from ports, and the second NIC might be generally unsupported, due to being a rebranded HP card. I have other NICs I can swap in, but to get ports, I've attached a USB NIC and FreeBSD recognizes that one.

A quick sysrc to enable IPv6 on […]

Also, a USB 3.2 hub somewhere in my system seems to be resetting repeatedly, filling the console with logs. I'll have to deal with that one later, but I might power it off with usbconfig to not get in my way for now.

Base system installed. I've chosen pkgbase, premised on the hope that I can rely on the docs for future updates.

The installer didn't find either NIC on my machine, so I'll have to figure out how to load the requisite drivers before anything else.

Historical artifacts like having separate arp and ndp commands isn't a showstopper for me when considering using a *BSD, and it does speak towards good design principles. That is, not changing something when it isn't broken.

And in all likelihood, when v6 finally is the predominant IP version […]

That said, I will say that ip(8) on Linux -- while poorly named -- is a welcome relief from ifconfig/route/bridge/arp/ndp. Maybe not the part where ip(8) combines all that functionality into one command -- thus violating the UNIX philosophy. But rather, ip(8) organizes things closer to network […]

Well, rip. Nautilus crashes when using Vulkan rendering whenever maximizing the window. If all of GNOME is also using Vulkan, then the entire GUI will become unstable.

So I've removed Vulkan from /etc/environment and will just have to use nautilus with the Cairo backend. Cairo isn't suitable […]

Latest problem: thumbnails in nautilus (GNOME Files) are only showing as blank boxes.

Checked: thumbnail PNG generation is OK. Google for obvious solutions.

Attempts: strace to see if PNG being read. Pulled dbgsym for nautilus to verify thumbnail logic using GDB.

Root cause: GTK 4.18 defaults […]

Another observation after realizing I didn't update my Linux kernel: the equivalent to DKMS doesn't really exist for FreeBSD, apparently because the KABI does not change within major versions (eg FreeBSD 14 vs 15, a difference of 2 years). Whereas for Linux, the major versions (eg 6.16 vs 6.17) […]

They're conning statistically unsophisticated, disappointed voters with impressive-looking, but meaningless, "analysis" that tell people what they want to believe.

If you push back, they challenge you to prove a negative - "if this is wrong, just show there WASN'T fraud".

That's not how it […]
