Pretty sure my mom cheats by adding a little more sweet to her recipe every year😄It is a peculiar and fun tradition that is pretty localized to the states in the south of India. All the traditions have dwindled in my family over the years but this one we do for fun.

Fascinating! My family doesn't have any traditions for the 31st Dec/1st Jan but the Hindu calendar doesn't quite follow the Gregorian calendar, so our New Year falls sometime in March. Tradition is to make a chutney with six tastes (sweet, savory etc). What you taste first is how your year goes 😆
