TL;DR
People lose social connections after an ABI. They use social media yet receive little support to use it. We developed the Social Media and Online Communication Assessment (SOCA) tool, to guide clinicians in supporting use of social media for communication, participation, & inclusion after ABI

They continue to use social media after their injury yet receive little support to use it safely. This research aimed to co-create a social media communication assessment tool to support people in setting and achieving social media goals in rehabilitation. We developed the Social Media and Online Communication Assessment (SOCA) tool, the first of its kind to guide clinicians in supporting use of social media for communication, participation, and inclusion after ABI.

TL;DR
People with #TraumaticBrainInjury used Instagram & YouTube to: Educate; Share; Promote; Motivate & Support. YouTube posts told personal stories, while Instagram emphasised community & overcoming challenges. Health professionals should support safe & effective use of social media in rehab.

Recently got to present (at the IBIA World Congress) some awesome work by past Honours students (Charlene Lo, Sonia Tint, & Janet Tedjasasmita) on exploring #BrainInjury related posts on social media & developing an assessment tool to guide clinicians in supporting use of social media after ABI 🧵

Thought-provoking #DigitalHealthWeek2025 panel this afternoon - so important to have these conversations about supporting underserved populations but even more important to ‘walk the talk’ - as Talat Uppal said (paraphrased) ‘our health system should follow the person & not be so compartmentalised’
