Disassembling today’s “democracy melting” art installation on 4th St (of Trump-Epstein statue fame).
I walked by the set-up this morning on my way to teach my Politics of Protest course.
The artist team has done ice sculpture installations before, but right now in DC “ice” has extra resonance.

Trump's emotional targeting of comedy figures is so telling. Hypermasculine strongmen DESPISE being made fun of.
Again, look to Turkey. Experts literally testified on whether comparing Erdoğan to Gollum was an insult. A guy sharing a meme was jailed.
And then there's the satire magazine closures.

In Turkey, this is called "havuz medyası" ("pool media"). It is achieved via:
1) Vertical dissemination of narratives from the government
2) Political economy ties that incentivize private channels' compliance PLUS
3) Intimidation that combine to produce (often anticipatory) compliance

My article "Film-Making the Nation Great Again" with @draege.bsky.social is out in Perspectives!
Poli sci work on authoritarianism and populism largely overlooks audiovisual strategies.
Our multi-modal study uses a new dataset of 11,000+ regime YouTube videos in Turkey.

Thousands turned out in blazing heat to protest the militarization of DC and much more.
Multiple contingents uniting their grievances, lots of humor, atmosphere of care and solidarity. Reminded me of Gezi.

Turkey's Diyanet is ramping up its calls to police women's bodies, behaviors, and rights. Its Friday sermon two weeks ago condemned tight garments as "clothed nudity."
Less obvious are the vernacular channels policing women's dress, speech, etc.
Like the cooking shows I studied:

Before my PhD, I worked mostly in arts and media. Regimes invest lots in AV media, but Pol Sci largely doesn't engage it.
So I was thrilled to see images in the proofs for Film-Making the Nation Great Again with @draege.bsky.social. We analyze autocrats' AV instrumentalizations of history.

I then analyze how competition shows engage in "othering" women contestants who do not comply with the regime's ideals.
Think midriff-bearing, outspoken "villains" viewers love to hate.
All in a reality format that producers - aware of regime oversight - heavily curate.

I analyze how host-based shows engage in "modeling" regime-prescribed behavior for women.
Think of a Rachael Ray-esque "girl-next-door" type who provides tips and life hacks. Like how to please mothers-in-law by using their recipes and husbands by dressing up.

Channeling my past as a pastry chef, I draw on 600 hours of cooking show content to analyze "conservative gender edutainment.
I assemble a dataset of Turkish cooking shows (2002-2022) to demonstrate how media ownership shifts and crony capitalism shape regime-aligned content.

Lots of speculation on how/why Colbert’s show was cancelled.
I distinctly remember giving a presentation on media capture in early Fall 2024. Audiences were skeptical that my insights from Turkey - or those of my panelists from India and Venezuela - had anything to do with the US.
Ah well.

There's a lot going on in Turkey's politics right now. The repression rate is ratcheting up.
I aim to provide insights with a new dataset on populist audiovisual strategies. Please join me at IPC this Thursday at 11am.

Folks in Istanbul please join me July 10 at IPC.
I'll present findings from a new dataset of over 11,000 YouTube videos. In two projects with @draege.bsky.social, our multi-method analysis examines regimes' instrumentalizations of history and foreign threat production.

To take a news break, I watch cooking shows. I went to cooking school before grad school. It's also how I learned Turkish.
But politics is everywhere, as I argue in a forthcoming Politics & Gender article. Here, a contestant calls an ingredient "red grape juice" because saying "wine" is banned.

Just back in Istanbul for a summer of figuring out next steps, working on some projects, watching the US go down Turkey’s path.
Some good news to share this time. My article on cooking shows as conservative gender edutainment was accepted at Politics & Gender.

Amid political power grabs and mass protests in Turkey, I'm lucky to host @bilgeyesil.bsky.social on April 2. Her new book analyzes media tools the ruling AKP uses in trying to control narratives across English-language platforms.

Opposition contender İmamoğlu arrested.
100s of those protesting this were detained.
Lawyers assigned to represent protesters were detained.
Izmir Bar Association leaders found no one at court to present their objections. They taped their documents to the court’s door (their photo).

A tiny part of me keeps hoping for the big reveal when we learn this is all some kind of Plato's cave-Truman show-survey experiment.
But from studying populist authoritarianism I know this is how it happens, that the US was never immune, and that those who thought it was are part of the problem.
