I'd assumed that for Scottish kids going free in Scotland that the Scottish Govt picked up the tab.
I'm from Stirling, back in the early 80s virtually all went to Glasgow or Strathclyde. Never really thought why. Not much difference travel wise. As you know Edinburgh is ridiculously expensive now

Glasgow Uni always had a large amount of working class kids and as far as I remember in the early 80s, Edinburgh was always quite snobby. Glasgow had a lot of local Strathclyde kids who commuted. Very few east coast kids went there.
