A coral-like porcelain skull mask. Highly textured and sculptural, the colours are bright and fresh, with turquoise, orange, lime green and white. The skull has white wavy fins radiating across the forehead, with lime green coral honeycomb, orange anemones, electric blue glass-filled craters and a background of turquoise sponge. The mask is displayed at an angle.

A chaotic jumble of coral-like ceramic sculptures in a crate, just out of the kiln. The colours are bright, with a lot of orange, green and turquoise, and the white of unglazed porcelain. There are lots of textural and sculptural motifs, including waves, fans, spirals, craters, brain coral, anemones and ridges. There is a predominantly blue, coral skull mask, centrally amongst the pieces. Also, slightly out of place, a small green acorn and two scarab beetles, one a minty green, the other bright orange.

PEARL-a self-explanatory ocean name. Just a touch of ash glaze on this one. The qualities of the fired, unglazed porcelain are so lovely, almost like alabaster.

A white skull mask, made of porcelain, displayed at an angle. The skull is covered in coral-like textures, with craters, petals and sponge-like pits. She also has a number of small finger-like protrusions, sticking out randomly, with a small group on the right hand cheekbone. She has some small, feathered, fan-like pieces on the forehead and one on the left cheek. The only colour is in glassy aqua craters, scattered mainly across the cheekbones. The textures are delicate and lace-like.

A teardrop-shaped coral-like ceramic sculpture. It has three large, feathered, orange fans with lime green centres and to the top right, jutting out along the side, are five red, forked tongue-shaped branches. The body of the piece, mostly disguised by the sculptural elements, is turquoise sponge with a scattering of aqua glassy craters…these also make their way onto the centres of the fans. The piece looks like a coral outcrop in vibrant colours.

A collection of coral-like ceramic sculptures just out of the kiln. The colours are bright, with a lot of orange, green and turquoise, along with some bright white of the unglazed porcelain. There are lots of textural and sculptural motifs, including spikes, petals, waves, fans, branches, craters, brain coral, anemones and ridges. To the bottom left, there is a predominantly white coral skull mask, with fans and spikes. To the right of it, a spiral shape with short spikes. Above the mask is a small coral comet in green and white. As the pieces are all stacked together in a box, it’s sometimes hard to see the individual pieces, it reads as a cacophony of forms, textures and colours-quite chaotic!

A small porcelain sculpture, held up to the sun with a blue sky behind it. The sculpture is white, with lots of texture and the porcelain glows where its thinnest, notably through the feather texture on the organically shaped fans, and through some little starburst craters on the main body of the piece. There are also some short spikes, randomly placed, but these are too solid to let the light through.

A coral-like ceramic sculpture with glowing colours. There are lots of textural and sculptural motifs, including vivid yellow spikes and lime green fans with orange and red petals towards the base and more lime green in the centre. The main body of the piece has a white sponge base with peach coloured craters and turquoise starbursts. The piece is asymmetric with the yellow spikes emerging from between the fans in the centre and towards the bottom left.

A porcelain wall sculpture. It has a central round section with a white sponge-like texture. There are some peachy ridged craters and tiny yellow spots. There are three layers of vivid yellow wavy tentacles radiating from the main piece, to form a sun-like ocean creature. There’s one large set like sun rays, a smaller set closer to the centre and six short spikes in the centre.

A ceramic toadstool sculpture, held in an outstretched hand. It’s 3D, but flat on the back, so it can be hung on the wall. It’s based on a shaggy ink cap, so it’s a tall, quite narrow, mushroom, with a long stalk. It has a shaggy texture in cream and brown and the black gills curl up slightly at the edge.

The colours are very bright, with a lot of orange, green, red, turquoise and yellow, with many textural and sculptural motifs, including spikes, waves, fans, branches, craters, brain coral, anemones and ridges. The piece that takes centre-stage is a round sun-like piece, with vivid yellow tentacles radiating from a central area of white sponge and peach-coloured craters. There are also a few scarab beetle sculptures.

Pieces in the kiln, slowly heating up. It usually takes around 24hours to reach temperature and another 24hours to cool down, before I can see the results! They’ll be brighter once fired.

IRAS- Coral Comet

Comets are usually named after whomever discovered them, but this one is named after IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Telescope.) It was discovered in photos taken by the telescope.

A coral-like ceramic comet sculpture which is currently unfired clay. There are lots of textural and sculptural motifs, including rosette craters, tiny flowers and even smaller pits. The tail of the comet is made of flame-like or claw-like streamers.

Another ring-shaped wall sculpture, named after an impact crater.

This one is MIZARAI, named after a buried impact crater in Druskininkai, in Lithuania. It is estimated to be 500 million to 570 million years old and was found during an international seismic survey.

There are a number of petal-like fans, pinched out of the main body, opening up like a chrysanthemum. the doughnut-shaped body of the piece has a sponge pattern and large round divots. My hand is in the photo, which shows the piece is roughly the size of a dinner plate.

I’ve started another series. I made a ring-shaped former so I thought I’d name these pieces after impact craters.

This is AOROUNGA, named after an eroded impact crater in Chad, in the Sahara Desert. It is estimated to be less than 345 million years old.

A doughnut-shaped ceramic sculpture, still in its unfired state. There are a number of fin-like structures, pinched out of the main body, crossing the piece in one direction (in this image, oriented diagonally.) The high points of the fins are smooth, with the lower areas, the doughnut-shaped piece itself, has patterns of dots in different sizes, some as tiny target motifs, running in lines alongside the fins.

A ceramic sculpture on a granite plinth. The sculpture depicts a pair of cupped hands, filled with natural textures…a crab, sea anemone, seaweed, limpet and coral. Clover, celandines, a beetle, blackberries and a small tortoiseshell butterfly. Only the butterfly is in full colour, and looks as if it could be a real one, alighting on the sculpture. The rest is the natural grey of the clay with shadows and highlights to bring out the texture. There are also words stamped into the clay: Opdage, discover, Vokse, grow, Udforske, explore, Beskytte, protect. The art installation is in the foreground, and behind you can see it’s located on a grassy hill, with terracotta rooftops in the town below. The sky is blue.
