My intro to Fugard’s plays came in the 1970s, seeing “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” and “The Island”. These plays gave me a greater understanding of the inhumane nature of apartheid. His later plays helped me to further appreciate the rampant horrors of entrenched inequality.
