Went to the archives today with two classes and we saw and sang from medieval manuscripts, explored an early modern print of Byrd songs, and an 1840s edition of Purcell’s Bonduca (ie story of Boudica). Recording recommendations for Bonduca welcome, including any “with piano forte accompaniment“!!

First coffee in my #LightbulbMoments mug! The exhibition opened last week at the Victoria Gallery & Museum @livuninews.bsky.social and is worth it as much for the dolphin skeleton as seeing the original manuscript of Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D on display.

Looks a lot like the one of a young woman seated at the virginals by Vermeer, I think. Also has a gamba waiting for a duet.

Sunny and blustery short walk above Marsden, where we found the new curlew sculpture.

The plural and brackets so it makes sense to each and both of us are everything. Chocolate has also appeared, delayed because of “the clocks going forward”. 10/10

Changing trains at dusk can be rather beautiful, though sadly no time to dwell in the Station Buffet

Lovely visit to Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts today. Lots of high tech facilities of course but it was the glimpses of the building’s heritage that were most striking. #Liverpool

Love the fact that the poster nuns for the Medieval Women exhibition @britishlibrary.bsky.social are singing the correct introit for the start of Mass (Suscepimus deus misericordiam tuam) and that I can look it up quickly on Cantus. cantusdatabase.org/chant/667264 #nuntastic Visiting BL on 1 Feb!!!

At the end of a week when we moved house, attended the carol service at our village church, my daughter sang her heart out by candlelight, and my wife played cornet in the brass band. Super northern / Yorkshire Christmas Eve (Son socialising..!)

Our snowy back garden. Roads and pavements covered. Grateful to colleagues for running open day without me, given yesterday’s black ice experience and sliding slowly but chaotically to the train.

The family walked a section of York city walls yesterday in the sunshine. Son said he quite liked the size of the buildings but would need to change the windows.

My weekend included watching two cracking concerts: avant-garde multimedia vocal performance with tap dancing, and a local brass band performing a super set of pieces from Rimmer marches and virtuosic solos to Ruby Tuesday, dir. Paul Lovett Cooper. #hcmf #SlawitBand
