I have to share this amazing plant I saw on my walk today. Google says it is a "harlequin glorybower (Clerodendrum trichotomum), also known as the peanut butter tree." Does anyone know about these???

I just made some very exciting (to me) 2026 plans!!!
I registered for the Level 1 Bookbinding course with the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artist Guild. Hope to connect with other bookbinding nerds along the way - please wave if that's you!

I'm visiting my hometown and just had a lovely time with a book club at the Cole Harbour Library talking about Adrift and climate change. I love book clubs so much, they have all been so thoughtful and kind in their discussions of Adrift.
Love love love these conversations!

Got on stage last night and read the opening of the novel I'm currently working on. And realized mid-read that it's kind of gory. (By "kind of", I mean "very".) Fortunately, there is a lot of crossover between sci-fi and horror so the audience wasn't traumatized (I don't think).

The book signing event is a two for one deal: me and another Dartmouth High alumni, Rose Sutherland @sutherrose.bsky.social - fun fact, we had the same creative writing teacher!
Come hang out with us both 1-3pm on Sat. Oct 11 at Indigo (Chapters) Dartmouth at MicMacMall

I'll be in Halifax/Dartmouth in Oct for the first time since my debut novel came out!

I'll be in Halifax/Dartmouth in October - my first time home since my book was published! I have 1 day left where I could fit in a book club meeting if anyone is part of a club that wants to read Adrift & have me pop by. Send me a message/email by Sept 25th if this might be your book club!

Someone's (awesome) writing at a recent workshop reminded me SO MUCH of the 2004 show Wonderfalls and now I desperately need to rewatch it. Anyone else remember it?? I think Fox only aired 4 episodes before cancelling but released all 13 episodes on DVD. Now to find a copy...

the brilliant novella The Annual Migration of Clouds!

I cannot put into words how excited I am for this opportunity!! And how excited I am to see the Banff Centre create space to support scifi writers!

I received the most amazing email last week. I'm still stunned...

I was offered a spot in a literary science fiction writing residency at the famous Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Even better - my mentor for the residency will be Premee Mohamed - who wrote...

There is a BC book club that pairs a book with a wine each month and offers a discount on each. It's a genius idea (books + wine? Yes!).
Adrift is their May selection and I can't wait to try the wine!

Adding this lovely summary they crafted for Adrift: "a gripping near-future thriller...". 😊

I need non-doom book content in my feed. Please! What's the book you just finished? Did you like it?

For me: Erasure by Percival Everett, which was excellent (but reminded me that I really need to read The Invisible Man).

When I wrote my debut speculative novel set in a future Canada, I imagined Canada had established stronger border security and introduced new visa regulations for Americans. I wasn't sure readers would buy it. Well, that believability problem is solved now.

My December reading wrap up. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've read any of these!

Friendly reminder that my novel Adrift is officially an award-winning book, so if you're looking for gift ideas and know someone who enjoys that kind of thing or climate fiction, or near-future set mysteries - consider picking up a copy!
(apologies for crass promo post)

I've been at an artist residency in rural Maine for the past 23 days and tomorrow I start the journey home. This experience has been absolutely amazing - three weeks of time and space (and being fed) so I can just focus on writing. Huge thank you to Monson Arts for this incredible gift.

The town I'm in in rural Maine has a library and I snagged a copy of James! No waitlist!

Okay, looks like we are all settling here now, yes?

I'm currently finishing up an amazing three week writing residency in Maine and have to return to the real world in a few days.
