i thought you’d like it!!! very ode-coded. it’s from among wolves by timothy pachirat. definitely the most creative methods book ive read - it takes the form of a play

it is terrible! i shouldn’t have hope! ive spent the whole week at a conference being told how bad the job market is, but one positive comment from my supervisor has me forgetting all that

ooooooh im so curious about where this will go now
November 29, 2025 at 4:59 AM
now that’s one way to meet departmental recommendations

it wasnt even the conversion camp so much, though that was part of it! moreso her questions about helen not liking her books and interest in zosia. i do love how they gave us this abrasive one-note character and are slowly revealing her complexity

hmmm no i think that ep just made me Get carol much better. i was struggling with her as a protaganist prior to that (not because she’s an asshole, but because i didnt have any basis on which to begin understanding why she was an asshole)

ohhhh yeah. it was ep4 that really hooked me!!!

lmao as always, management does not understand how teaching/research actually works. “just do things quicker” “integrate AI” “here, have class sizes of 120+”

offended*
October 14, 2025 at 3:24 AM
yeah. if you can ask an AI everything, why would you ask another human being? why would you make connections
October 14, 2025 at 3:23 AM
curious as to your experience as well - especially with all the other trump-related pressures on US universities? is there any link there?
October 14, 2025 at 3:22 AM
all this is to say that the pressure has mainly been cultural and top-down effort, part of university branding, rather than being a mandate or expectation. there is definitely push back, but there’s been no need for any open warfare as yet
October 14, 2025 at 3:21 AM
the pressure to integrate AI is mostly felt in teaching i think. there is some suggestion that it can be used to automate marking and administration work. i have strong doubts - and i know some australian unis that have been recently sued for using AI to detect AI-written assessments
October 14, 2025 at 3:17 AM
i mostly get suggestions to use AI from other young PhDs. though i can’t help but be offenced by these suggestions, lol. i chose to do a phd, why would i want to automate any of this experience?
October 14, 2025 at 3:15 AM
but largely i think it depends on the supervisor - my supervisors are very much in favour of hands-on research work and immersion in literature/data, so im lucky to find no pressure to use AI from them
October 14, 2025 at 3:14 AM
about a year ago, central office had these posters plastered everywhere about how “AI can be your collaborator, your ideas man, your research assistant”. which we of course found hilarious, as many of us barely subsist on the income from RA work. they were torn down in many departments
