I know plenty myself! We all grew up with ideals of an older generation we had to overcome unless we wanted to become as boring and snobbish as them.

Let's be real, OP's "people told me not to bother so I gave up learning art" is the real issue. If all it takes for you to be told not to invest in your skills for you to give up you don't have it in you to overcome your hardship anyway
