A brash poet disguises himself as the noble he serves so he can take his place in a contest to determine the king’s bard. He soon becomes trapped by the politics of a competition that is more corrupt than it seems.

Do not deny your birthright.” Next panel, Ceridwen lifts Morfran’s hand. Morfran tells her to wait, but she then drags the hand down into the cauldron. Morfran screams. At the bottom of the page, Morfran is in shock as he tears his hand away from the scalding heat of the cauldron. Ceridwen stares in confusion.

Art: Page 3. Morfran drops to the ground and Ceridwen follows: “It burned you,” she says, “What have you done?” Gwion stands in the background, staring. His shocked expression is in focus in the next panel. Something begins whispering into the room, voice emanating from the cauldron. “Gwion,” it says. Gwion looks up and his eyes appear vacant. The voice continues calling, “Gwion Bach.” The final panel shows the room overtaken by smoke from the cauldron, the color an eerie green. The words “Sing your poem unto us” echo through the room but only Gwion reacts.

Art. Page one of a comic sequence. James and Iwan sit on the ground in Iwan’s kitchen. There is a man lying on the ground next to them. James looks at Iwan and says, “Now, I think it’s about time to silence him.” Iwan tries to ask what the other man means by that, but is shocked to see James take out a knife. Iwan says, “That’s… my knife.” When James moves the weapon toward the man tied up on the ground, Iwan protests, “N-no. I didn’t like what they were doing, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to die.” James replies, “But the doctor did?” He continues, “You don’t deny it would feel good… because you know it would,” James lifts the knife to Iwan’s face, “You’re not yourself when you deny something as natural as pleasure.” James attempts to push the knife into Iwan’s hand but Iwan pushes it back saying, “I wasn’t myself for a decade.”

Iwan stares at it, frustrated and scared, “Averill was supposed to be the end,” Iwan says, “I put my own life on pause to give him what he deserved. But now, I can go back.” James, with his hand wrapped around Iwan’s and the knife’s hilt, guides Iwan’s arm up and points the blade at the throat of the man on the floor. Iwan stares defiantly and says, “Back to who I was before. I don’t need you.” They both pause with the knife poised above the terrified captive’s throat. James sighs, “Oh, Iwan…”

Art. Page 3. James rests his chin on Iwan’s shoulder, their faces touching, as he says, “But I want you to.” Iwan frowns and turns his eyes away from James to the knife. Iwan’s hand holds it but, after a pause, he lets it fall. Iwan says, “No.” James stares in shock and then his expression twists into one of confusion and consternation. Iwan attempts to back away, defuse the situation, but James casually reaches for the knife on the floor. He wraps his hand around it, “I see.”

Art. Page 4. James looks down and considers. He lifts the knife from the floor. Iwan asks, off-panel, “James?” James doesn’t reply as the captive man watches, growing frantic. He tries to mutter through his gag a “no” and shift away from James as the knife is placed at his throat. In one clean swoop, James slits the man’s throat and Iwan watches in shock. The blood splatters on Iwan’s face. Iwan flinches away but then James takes his hands and puts them on Iwan’s face, forcibly turning it back to the body on the floor. James commands Iwan, “Watch.”

Art: Page 1 of a comic sequence. In the bright sitting room, Iwan climbs down the stairs, still in his pajamas. James sits in the loveseat situated in the middle of the room, reading a book. James looks up, sees Iwan, and says, “Iwan. Good morning.” Iwan, confused, replies, “You’re still here…” James stands up, facing Iwan who is now at the foot of the stairs, and says, “I wanted to continue reading. You once compared me to Blodeuedd. I wished to know her fate.”

Art: Page 2. James puts his book down as Iwan stands across from him, arms crossed. Iwan says, “Well, I’m sorry then. It wasn’t a good one.” James replies, “Flowers forced into a human shape so a man could marry her… cursed to the night, twisted into an owl, all for failing to fulfill a role she never wanted.” In response, Iwan wonders, “You felt bad for her.” James closes his eyes and asks, smiling, “Didn’t you?” Before Iwan can reply, a loud bang echoes in the room, coming from the door behind them that leads into the kitchen. Iwan wonders aloud, “What was…?” but stops as more noises come from behind the door. There’s a scraping sound and the strained echoes of the words “help me” over and over again. Iwan’s face distorts as he stares in shock. He turns his eyes to James.

Art: Page 3. James stares back, face smiling strangely, “Don’t be scared,” he says, “It’s for you.” Iwan turns away from James, back facing the kitchen door. “What did you do?” he asks. The sounds of a man crying out “help me” continue in the background. Iwan’s back hits the door as he stares at James in fear. Iwan looks at the door handle. He turns toward the door, considering. James drapes himself over Iwan’s shoulder, whispering, “Go ahead and open the door, Iwan. Don’t you want to see your gift?” Iwan’s hand settles on the door handle.

Art: Page 4. Iwan, expression fearful, slides open the door as James watches with mild amusement. Inside the dark kitchen is a man in boxers and a t-shirt. He’s tied to a wooden chair. There had been a gag tied around his mouth, but it has since come off. The chair, and man, are not upright but lying horizontally on the ground. James says, “Ah. It seems I should have tied the rope tighter.”

He opens his door and steps out into the hallway and down the stairs.
