Yeah, Qd8 is a better defense - but that's a winning endgame too, Black's pieces are far too passive to generate any counterplay.

My opponent resigned as soon as I played Qc8 :D

Exactly right!

Pawn endgame two pawns up is a smooth victory - just activate the king and use the pawns to allow your king to infiltrate further and take all their pawns and promote

I explain it through 4 example principles.

If you don't know them, it's time to learn them!
If you do know them, it's time to understand them! 😉

That's it, well spotted!

I also threw in a queen trade to make it cleaner haha

Yep, that's it hahah I thought I had a trick, but I tricked myself!

I only realized this after I posted this problem haha a comment pointed this out to me.

Well spotted on your side! :D

Luckily in the game my opponent played Rd1+ first and then Rd4, making my idea work haha

Nice job, that was my idea!

Funnily enough, my idea was a blunder because Rxf6 is met by Rd1+! and Black takes on the next move.

Luckily in the game he played Rd1+ first and then Rd4, making my idea work! 🤣

Congratulations! :D

There's no specific tip, sometimes things just click and you ride the high for a while :)

Keep up the good work and keep training!

The character limit here is annoying, I had to shorten my responses as much as possible haha

If you want to improve faster, I'd love to jump on a call - I specialize in under 1000 players.

I'll show you all the things you need and more importantly - the things that you DON'T need! Interested? :D

Why do I say the answer is straightforward and obvious? Because the only things to look at are material and king safety.

Ignore everything beyond that. Ignore pawn weaknesses, ignore tempo, ignore long middlegame plans, endgame theory, everything else.

Get ALL pieces out, spot the mistakes and gg!

Below 1000 there is no need for any deep evaluation at all, just one question of "Who is better and why?" is enough. Usually the answer to this question is pretty straightforward and obvious in most positions.

Most games there are decided by who blunders the least amount of times :D
