Finally, Megan Peters (@meganakpeters.bsky.social) will explore how we can best adjudicate between First-Order and Higher-Order theories?

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Third, Steve Fleming (@smfleming.bsky.social) will explore Higher-Order Theories of Consciousness, which associate consciousness with higher-level processing towards the front of the brain
August 10, 2025 at 4:25 PM
Second, Lars Muckli (@larsmuckli.bsky.social) will explore First-Order Theories of Consciousness, which associate consciousness with processing in the sensory cortices
August 10, 2025 at 4:25 PM
First, I'll introduce what we mean by Consciousness and what is typically taken to be Unconscious in vision (the Feedforward Sweep)

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who made it to VSS Demo Night!

Got to show 63 people my VR Scale Illusion, with 88% seeing the effect!

Highlight of the night: Seeing people teach each other about the other illusions whilst I was demoing the VR Scale Illusion 😊

But that’s not what we find. We can alternate between the different interpretations of the disk as “yellow” and “blue” without a change in the disk’s perceptual appearance

I argue it does not. Take this illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka based on Anderson & Winawer (2005). If it did, then as we alternate between the different interpretations (“yellow”, “blue”) of the disk, we should expect to see the disk changing in appearance

5. COLOR CONSTANCY

Does color constancy really affect perceptual appearance?

But that’s not the case. The frames around the cars appear undistorted, whilst the cars themselves continue to “look” distorted
May 17, 2025 at 12:51 AM
I argue it does not. If that were the case, then any object in the same region of the image as the cars should be distorted by the same amount as the cars (Image from Reddit)

4. Size Constancy

Does size constancy really affect perceived angular size?
