40-41) Say Nothing + First They Killed my Father: I decided to start alternating between fiction books and non-fiction. I liked these books but I don't really read enough non-fiction to judge them the way I do fiction books, which is why I'm trying to read more in the first place.

39) The God of Small Things: Read this book like years ago and I understood the book more upon re-read but it still was a little too esoteric to grab me.

36-38) Temeraire Books 4-6: I'm really going to wait until I finish the entire series before giving my opinion as a whole, but a fantasy book series hasn't given me this much brainworms since realm of the elderlings.

35) Volume 2 - The politics are so good I forget I'm reading yaoi.

34- Half of a Yellow Sun - never has a book been ruined so fast for me by one single scene.

33) Remnants of Filth 6 - this is the only work by this author that I can stand.
March 17, 2025 at 10:38 PM
30-32) Temeraire books 1-3 - the best dragon books are the ones where the dragons have a personality of their own instead of being cats.

29) CFC - meh.
March 17, 2025 at 10:26 PM
20-28) Fate Strange Fake vol. 2-9 - it's really hard to make judgement calls on this entire series because it feels like a lot of the volumes are set up for naritas finale and I think I'll judge a lot of the series on how the ending pans out because it seems like vol 10 will be 1000 pages long.

19) Nademonogatari - My feelings are a little more mixed on this one. The quality of a monogatari voice varies on the narrator and I like Nadeko's narration voice, but also some modern nisio books really feel like he writes them on autopilot, and my reaction is just "This is a nisioisin book."

18) Fate Strange Fake - It's hard to judge these books on an individualized basis because they are unlike baccano and drrr the volumes aren't self contained at all they're one part of a much bigger story so all I can say is Narita good.

17) Wazemonogatari - I am really not a fan of Shinobus character, but having the book narrated from Deathtopias unique perspective did her character a lot of favors.

16) Witches - This was a really interesting book I normally wouldn't have picked up but I'm glad I did. The book was split between two narratives, the narrative that embraced the surrealism and magical realism was definitely my favorite. I liked he way the characters voice was written.

15) Fate/ SF - I feel like there's not much to add since I've been a big fan of Naritas collective works, but I think it's a credit to his character creation that in this Fake Assasssin a character I wouldn't normally like is my second favorite character after Sigma.

14) Orokamonogatari - This book definitively proves the single worst aspect of Monogatari is Araragi its amazing how much the quality of the characters and story shoots up when he's not onscreen. I wasn't that interested in off season until i read this but my interest shot straight up.

There's like the larval form of a lot of interesting ideas here but Nisio reused them all a lot better in his later works. It kind of feels like reading a first draft of stuff he'd go on to write later on like there's ajimu, there's medaka, there's the flask plan.

ZAREGOTO - UPROOTED RADICAL: I do not like the ending to my favorite book series unfortunately. If I had to just give one example imagine a character as interesting as Izuru Kamukura except as a cute loli girl with no agency whatsoever and no personality outside of being obsessed with the Mc.

SOUSHIKI ZEROZAKI HUMAN EXAM - Soushiki is a character I'm fond if and I think he makes a very fun take on Illumi who is my favorite from Hunter X Hunter. I really don't like the direction Zaregoto takes post volume six so it's nice to read something that's a little more classic nisio.

ZAREGOTO - This is when Nisio starts introducing the simulation complex ideas that will later be reused in Ajimus character. Another book that proved bad things happen to Iichan because he is an idiot, but he would rather blame fate or destiny rather than his own bad decision making.

And not showing. For example Kodaka clearly ripped off Iichan and Kunagisa relationship when making Matsuda and Junko they both even have a sandcastle backstory, but Junko is her own character outside of Matsuda's point of view. Junko is one of the most iconic characters of all time in comparison.

ZAREGOTO - Finally back to the psychological thriller and mystery aspects that NISIO does best. The solution in this one is even more absurd than the first book, Utsirigi Gaisuke is probably the highlight. One problem though is that it's hard go like Kunagisa because everything about her is telling
