Personifications with dementia as a malevolent agent or opponent do echo media construals; however, the users in turn construe themself as agentive warriors (even if they acknowledge that their agency is diminished or altered). This shows why mass media construals can be described as problematic 6/6

Individual metaphorical occurrences may give evidence of dementia’s impact on the users’ daily life (e.g. “it [dementia] doesn’t play to the rules" sees dementia as a player who is cheating in a GAME) 5/

People diagnosed use metaphors (BODIES ARE MACHINES) to discuss physical changes, both as a process of making sense of the (changed) self, but also as ways of explaining dementia to other (non-diagnosed) users. ("I still hope it's just a blip and normal service will be resumed soon") 4/

People diagnosed use the source domains of WAR and LOSS, as well as the SPLIT SELF metaphor, to express their struggles with living with dementia, but also to construe themselves as agentive. ("I am a fighter and always will be, I will fight till the end" for WAR) 3/

I analyse data from a forum for people living with dementia. Contrary to some medical research suggesting those diagnosed are challenged in using conceptual metaphor, my data show rich and creative uses of metaphor. Negative mass media construals (FLOOD of dementia) are absent from the data 2/
