For more thoughts, I've got some writings from a blogged playthrough of it from about a decade ago. They start here:

And if you do want to give it a shot (today's an appropriate day!), it's free via GOG.

If you're a fan of RPGs, video game history, or stories and systems outside the norm, I invite you to give it a look. If you're not used to games of the era, it'll take some time to understand How It Works, but it's an absolute gem.

Happy 40th, U4. The Quest is truly forever.❤️

And though its age can indeed be an impediment to modern audiences, I liken it to reading Shakespeare - there's a lot worthwhile here, it just might take a little extra work to parse. It's a landmark of the genre, and a personal favorite, even though it's older than I am!

Its morality system presented a set of virtues the player needed to uphold individually rather than dichotomous "good/evil" options, and was baked in to the entire game, right down to character creation as a series of questions to determine which virtue was most favored.

Just about an annual ritual at this point! Still satisfying, too, no matter how many angles I approach it from

Planescape at least feels verbose with *purpose* - it's wordy, but never felt *rambly* to me in the way Tides does. Planescape has several scenes that stick with me just from the sheer effectiveness of its prose, whereas Tides... well, not so much. :P

It's been a while, but I remember enjoying it, if not as much as PS:T itself. Thought it was a little overly verbose (which is saying something coming from me :P), and didn't quite have the *oomph* of the original, but an honorable homage all the same. Been meaning to replay myself!

I'm looking forward to it! I've dabbled before and loved the vibe of Fallout, just never got around to getting very far in it. Perfect opportunity to find out everything I've been missing!

Ooh, solid list! Nearly every one of these has been on my own "need to finish" or "want to replay" lists for a long time! Good luck!

Couldn't get to a full twelve with any of the series I was considering, so I just went with the opening entry of twelve series XD (Well, eleven plus Arcanum. Pity that one never got a follow-up.)

If nothing else, it'll give me an idea of which ones I'd like to delve into further!

The past few years, I've picked a series to play through over the course of the year as a gaming goal. This time, I stuck to the initial entries of twelve series I've had an interest in for one reason or another, but never got to playing/finishing - time to fix that!
