This sounds like the beginning of every David Graeber book. Philosophers of old imagined some past to explain a present social phenomenon. They were wrong about the past, and if we actually study where the roots of this present phenomenon lie, we might draw conclusions of political relevance.

The only thing that eased my nerves a bit is that seems virtually impossible to do. How can he negotiate an agreement Europe has no say in and make us responsible that the deal is upheld? I just don't see how that would work.

It's not particularly useful, Hitler, as a politician, is not particularly well-understood by the general public. Making the comparison is just an attempt to classify Trump as beyond the pale, but who among his followers would be persuaded by you telling them Trump and Hitler are alike.

Let Trump 2 reveal, as all power does. Do Republican voters care about marital fidelity, evidently not. Do they care about ethical behavior, evidently not. Do they care if someone practices Christianity, evidently not.

Just like Democratic voters didn't care that Obama never closed gitmo.

The American people have shown the rest of the world they don't care. Trump 1 had a foreign policy that was all over the place and didn't care for traditional allies. Now they went for Trump 2 and it's the same. Assuming the American people get another say, they will pick more foreign policy chaos.

A crippled Russia is dangerous too, particularly for bordering nations. The most realistic prospect is that someone slightly less insane gets crowned the next Putin, while the nation slowly becomes less relevant because its economy is low growth and the population shrinking.

Exactly, remember the beautiful meetings with North Korea! Trump just won't. All he'll do is reduce aid to Ukraine and so worsen their position on the front. And he'll talk to Putin like he did to Kim, achieving nothing but photo ops and diminishing the office he holds.

Do any of you know if the theory of self domestication is still current? I read about it in Domesticated: Evolution in a Man-Made World. It seemed credible to me, but I've been fooled before. (I read and believed The Bloody White Baron by James Palmer for example)

The style of the reporting on a citizen-investigator hardly seems like the story, when Reddit and This Place seem to indicate that you might have a hard time finding a jury who would convict the murderer given his choice of victim and motive.

And to tag on, since we know sitting Presidents are immune from persecution for murdering people, why not preemptively and permanently exclude some Trump nominees from ever holding office again?

You know this might be a really sweet Christmas gift for the right person.

I'm not advising anyone to undertake action like this, it'll crush your life, quite likely get you killed, and society isn't worth it, also generally it doesn't work. But the current order needs to come down if we're to have a future, instead of a fried planet owned by a new aristocracy.

I don't see the link between availability of firearms and the willingness to engage in violent political action. The people of the occupied West Bank have shown cars can be used for political violence in ramming attacks. Yet very few people use them so.

That guy who shot Shinzo Abe also didn't cause a mass movement against the Unification Church nor corrupt Japanese politicians. This will probably lead to nothing, though with an incompetent like Trump at the helm you never know.

Maybe the American people aren't wrong if they universally hate a company

If this were spam, how would it look different?

Well I'm sure that there's a white guy called Alex Fitzpatrick somewhere.

Trump is also dishonest, lazy, rude, and disloyal in a way Bush jr wasn't. He might fail to pass major legislation while the House is for him and then in two years we'll see if the Americans are still Maga.
November 26, 2024 at 10:29 AM
I hope we'll be able to catch up to the a mal-governed America. The poorest American state is on par with the wealthiest nations of Europe on a per capita basis GDP. Sure we'll never be as wealthy as California, the state of billionaires, but we should be able to keep up with Minnesota!
November 26, 2024 at 10:26 AM
But why not expect it to go like Bush jr. 2 the rest of the way? A lame duck administration despised by the majority of the people, its largest policy effort the Iraq invasion a glaring failure, and the whole world ready to give the next guy applause everywhere and a noble prize for not being Bush.

I know you're just aggravating, but look at what has worked. Egypt has been pro status quo since they got the Sinai returned and a US check every year. The same could work with Syria, both are brutal dictatorships with a narrow ruling elite. It's not pretty but it works.

A complete and consistent moral philosophy of war would be applicable to all nations and conflicts.
