Posting this again having grabbed a slide with an error yesterday. 🤦 This is why editors hire editors.

Yes and... I'm not going to bother with a VPN to check out a landing page. So authors need a separate landing page with details, even if they continue to sell via Itchio (though they may also run foul of the payment-processor-related crackdown, even if they hadn't before)

Online Safety Act: explainer

The UK's Online Safety Act now requires age verification for anything deemed "adult content" (it's problematic AF, supposed to be about porn only but a lot of other things are getting caught up) and Itchio doesn't seem to have a way to do that, so just blocks sites.

As someone who grew up with zero queer rep – and who sees how little queer, spicy romance with male characters or written by male authors there STILL is in traditional publishing – it's so huge to be able to go into my local bookstore and get a book like this.

🏳️‍🌈 If you're an ally, be loud & remember "to ally" is a verb, an action. Take action.

🏳️‍🌈 If you're in the LGBTQIA+ community, let's find some joy for ourselves, hmm? Even if that is just the quiet joy of reading books in which we see ourselves.

But the existence & joy of LGBTQIA+ people is a protest in itself.

🏳️‍🌈 So, this Pride, please support LGBTQIA+ people, authors, creatives, charities... not the corporations who have been so quick to abandon human rights & DEI efforts.

We have come so far since then, and yet the LGBTQIA+ community is now faced with so many threats.

👊Trans Rights.
👊Freedom to live safely & without conversion therapy.
👊Support for LGBTQIA+ youth.
👊HIV/AIDS campaigning.

All are threatened, in a way that many of us haven't seen for a long time.

From your own source:
Jardine later said in a 24 April House of Commons session that she respects “the independence of the Supreme Court and the ruling it has made” but argued it should not come “at the cost of the human rights and the security of another vulnerable group in society.”

So look at the whole picture when finding an editor or proofreader, but make sure you check they are comfortable with the style guide, etc you want to use.

The most experienced editors may have started in in-house editorial teams – basically apprenticeships without a piece of paper.

Other courses & qualifications do not teach what someone needs to be an editor or proofreader. Or not in your specific field like self-publishing LGBTQIA+ books.

And FWIW courses & qualifications are not the clearcut sign of being a qualified-to-do-the-job editor some suggest.

Yes, ask about courses, qualifications, and experience.

I'm in online groups where people are advertising paid editorial services but who don't know what a style guide is. There are others unaware of different style guides in different places (usually affecting non-US authors).

It's an issue.

Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are not a case of right or wrong everywhere.

The style guide, dictionary, and style sheet (for everything not covered by or different to the style guide & dictionary) are how editors and proofreaders know what should be used in your manuscript.

Because if a line/copy editor or proofreader does not know which style guide and dictionary you want used, THEY CANNOT DO THE JOB.
