This sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) spent some time tearing great chunks off the seed hanging on the front bird bath, and I was so focused on taking photos that the front door slammed behind me, startling both of us. Later the cocky came back and strutted around on the grass a bit.

The cocky has one foot clutched around the bird bath, the other holding the bird seed block still so it can lever the seeds off with its heavy black beak. In the background is a fairly solid wall of variegated leaves. Over the bird's head can be seen a few more leaves, this ones brightly lit by the morning sun. The cocky is a large, pure white parrot with a lemon yellow curly crest. The same bird, this time standing on the ground looking to the right of frame. It's standing on longish fine green grass. Maybe because of the way it's standing, or perhaps its mood, but now there are a fluff of white feathers partially obscuring its beak. The lemon yellow curly crest stands up proudly as it tries to decide whether it's worth the effort to fly back up to the bird bath for another go at the seed block.

A red wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata) on our bottlebrush in the backyard. It's both cloudy and windy today, so not an ideal time to photograph a bird hanging upside down on flimsy bottlebrush branches, but at least it stayed long enough for me to get one photo in focus!
A red wattlebird hangs upside down so that it can feed on the nectar from a bright red bottlebrush flower. The two wattles (patches of skin that hang down) are visible on this bird. The yellow patch on the bird's belly can just be seen, but since the male and female are only distinguishable by size, I'm not sure of the sex of this bird. Red wattlebirds are one of the largets nectar eating birds in the world and are very common birds in Canberra.

Less than two weeks ago I took photos of the first snow pea flowers from my new seedlings. Now I have a half-dozen snow peas that need to be eaten before they get too big and tough, and dozens more flowers and tiny snow peas. I love growing snow peas. ❄️🌱

Beautiful day in Canberra today. Rainbows don't photograph well, but the water spout was causing lovely colours across the surface of Lake Burley Griffin.

We were visited by a small group of King Parrots today. I took this photo by slowly and quietly opening the front door and poking just my phone around the corner. They're such big, bright birds and they stayed for quite a while.
Some thin bushes which are being fed on by five King Parrots. The centre of the image has the clearest bird, which has a bright red head and body and emerald green wings.

This is my favourite time of the year: every afternoon, golden sunlight streams in through the window and illuminates my gorgeous cat as he sits attentively on a bookshelf at my eye level. 🧡🐈

Look at this label for the Australian "Tradie" brand men's underwear! The model has eighties styling above his neck and hairless muscle-bod below. Baffling!

But the most striking thing is the model wearing the trunks. From the neck up, you'd swear he was styled in the eighties, fluffy curly hair held in place by a white and black sweat band tight around his head, and a scruffy little moustache. From the neck down, he's very muscular and completely hairless.

This tapeworm wall art is SO BIG!!! It's taller than me, and longer than my house. It dominates the hallway, while also being invisible in the way that art in public places is. I had to hike a bit to find it, and talk to half a dozen or so bemused health care workers, but omfg, worth it. 3/

If you told me there was more than a kilometre of metal strip in this artwork, I would not be at all surprised. It's set off the wall a bit, the shadows cast by it are complex and interesting. The photo is curved in the middle because it's a panorama, but basically it's of a lovely hospital hallway with giant windows, each about 3m (10ft) tall and arranged in groups of three that look almost square. There are eight of these window groups visible, and back of the napkin math would suggest that the artwork is about 28m (90ft) long. Huge! The artwork itself is attached the wall above these windows and meanders along, with irregular edges, but the whole thing looks very curvy and biological. Through the windows are visible a courtyard with some benches and other visible buildings across the way. On the far right of the image are visible two random people chatting, for scale.

I haven't posted cranes lately, because I've been busy with other things, some of which mean visiting Canberra Hospital daily. I play Pokémon Go & a few days ago, I saw a pokéstop there called "Canberra Hospital Tapeworm Wall Art"! I just had to know wtf that was. This morning, I found it... 1/

No Man's Sky is just delightful lately. The current expedition is fun and weird and introduces new planetary types: deep ocean and gas giants. And the graphics just get better and better. I'm really enjoying it!
A No Man's Sky photo taken with the in-game camera. My robotic character is treading water in an almost still ocean with a planet in the dark purple and indigo sky above. There are oceans and landmasses visible on the planet in the sky and its reflection is clearly visible in the water. Beneath my character's feet you can barely make out some coral-like sea life below the water's surface. My same character (I love the vagabond robot designs and worked to get almost all of them from previous expeditions and quests) is standing in my first base on one of the new gas giant planets. In the foreground is a refiner (a tall blocky piece of yellow and chrome equipment installed in the centre of this round room), and behind can be seen glass windows and a holo-door. Through the doors and windows can be seen the raging surface of the gas giant, lit in blue and pink and purple. Large rocks float in the sky and gas clouds are visible. I love the NMS gas giant planets! Today I found a very long subsurface lagoon near my base and it's a great place to fish and stay out of the howling storms that can regularly drag you tens of metres in the air. I like the idea of having planets that just aren't survivable until you're a certain amount of geared up, and even then, can be reasonably precarious, but very rewarding. Another NMS screenshot, this time not using the in-game camera. My robot character stands on the edge of a spit of land looking off in to the distance where a lake stretches towards some small hills at the horizon. The sky is an amazing blend of real life colours for dawn: yellow, pink and blue. These colours (and the hills) are reflected in the slightly choppy water and the ground is also lit by the colours of dawn. It's SO GORGEOUS.

Cranes days 102 and 103. Crane photos taken in different playgrounds while out and about in Canberra parks. I played my first game of disc golf in ages today and it went pretty well! My score was terrible of course, lol, but at least we played nine holes and went for a nice walk.

On the right is a playground without any people in it. This crane really suffered for me bringing it along in my pocket. Usually I have a little box for transporting them, but I didn't bring it yesterday, so it got a little crumpled. For day 103, a Fukutsuru (or double) origami crane folded from blue and paper with a design of fans on it. The reverse of the paper is yellow and this is visible on the base of the crane. It's sitting on a brushed chrome curved bar, with another matching bar visible. These are the top of a children's spinner in a John Knight Park playground. In the background are some large native Australian trees, mostly eucalypts. Through the trees is visible some early morning summer sky which is not yet as blue as it will be at midday. There are also some fluffy white clouds.

Cranes day 101. Canberra has a wide range of cool public art, and this life-size sheep who's resting on her back on a deck chair is a local favourite. It's delightful to watch kids interact with this sculpture. www.arts.act.gov.au/public-art/a...

Crane day 100! Here's the group photo for the past 100 days of folding. I'll post a top ten photos from this project in the next few days, too. I've learned so much about origami and paper, and I've maybe not been as daily-mindfulness-exercise-of-creativity about it lately, but it's been lovely.
A wooden outdoor table is covered in about 100 origami cranes and crane-adjacent models. They're almost every colour. Today's crane is the large one at the top, folded from 30cm (12in) card. Never again, lol! Card is very awkward to fold and gives an overall bad result. This photo was taken late in the afternoon and there's dappled sunlight over the whole thing and shaggy late summer grass in the background. I did try to stand them all neatly, but there was just enough breeze to occasionally blow them over, so I had to give up.

Cranes days 94-99. Another bunch of cranes to be photographed, because I've been lacking some motivation lately. I had hoped that I would be done folding them by now, but I'm going to make it to at least about 125, sigh. Stanley's enjoying his "sit nicely near the cranes for treats" training.
Six origami cranes sit on an outdoor barbecue in the late afternoon sun, along with a backlit orange and white cat, Stanley. There are three fukutsuru (double) cranes and three normal cranes, folded from various floral and gradient papers. In the background is some longish grass; the recent rain is really making it jump out of the ground at the moment. Stanley is lying, sphinx style, and looking deceptively sleepy, given that he's about to jump up and beg again for treats while walking all over the cranes.
