I find much true about your thread. As I told another commenter, perhaps instead of saying, "This is why American democracy works," I should've said it's why it survives. Thanks for your comments.

Perhaps not a principle. But for many of us, an aspiration and a goal.

Perhaps I should've said, "That's why American democracy survives." Such as it is.

Indeed. The current revisionist efforts underway by the Roberts Court are, as Trump would say, sad. And odious.

I prefer to think of it as a work in progress. 🤞

An odious compromise.

That was a great point too! Quite thought provoking. It's one thing to think of our founding documents as derivative of earlier works and another to view them as an original work, one with new ideas and heretofore unheard of ambitions.

Hatred is a powerful driver, especially when ignorance is in the passenger seat providing directions.

"F*ck You I Got Mine"
Indicative of someone who already has what you want but is indifferent to your desires/needs.

A true "FYIGM" mentality.

Sorry! Gotta love social media, even with its limitations.

It wasn't *about* the lowly, but we made it about overselves. What words have inspired imagination more than these? They gave everyone permission to dream, to hope, and to act accordingly.
November 22, 2025 at 4:51 AM
True. But the "low born" didn't interpret Jefferson's words as excluding them. Native Americans, African Americans, women, and others took the words to heart. A wonderful, if unintended, consequence.

Excellent point and one which the Burns documentary didn't gloss over. To the extent Jefferson was a product of his time, his views were *understandable* although definitely not forgivable.

Also, the economic issues slavery brought into relief then were considerable.

Still unforgivable. As now.

It's true that we've not lived up to the promise of this principle, but for the U.S., it remains aspirational. As our Constitution's Preamble reminds us, we adopt this system because we want to form a more perfect union. We need to stick with that effort, always.
November 22, 2025 at 4:35 AM
I saw what you did there. 😄

In Ken Burns' new documentary, "The American Revolution," the idea that colonists of all stripes took to heart Thomas Jefferson's declaration that, "All men are created equal," was revelatory.

It was a principle which the masses, then and now, deeply embraced. That's why American democracy works.

Trump's choices:
•Refuse to release the files;
•Release them;
•Redact them.

The problem with redaction option is that someone, somewhere knows what's in the files, maybe several "someones," at least one who's not a Trump fan.

It's unclear what's most worrisome, but leaks should top the list.
