Prof #Draghi follows with a series of stark warnings:
- Europe’s dependencies theaten us,
- without growth, difficult to support ageing society or address #climate change.

One year on, it got worse:
- US tougher on trade,
- China became a stronger competitor, trade surplus up 20% in last year.
September 16, 2025 at 8:21 AM
And we’re off: one year after the #Draghi report.

Let’s hear what presumably has happened, and more importantly: what the Commission is really planning to boost #competitiveness of European industry in the race to the top on clean tech with #China. Lots of work still to be done.
September 16, 2025 at 7:49 AM
Von der Leyen's #SOTEU started more honest and sober than usual on acknowledging worries of citizens and that "dependencies are getting ruthlessly weaponised".

The part on #competitiveness was pretty weak but emblematic: much talk on urgency to support companies, little action to address this...
September 10, 2025 at 11:49 AM
It's encouraging to see that the Commission keeps the 35% climate mainstreaming in the new #MFF.

However, it's a wasted opportunity not to strictly exclude funding for #fossilfuel from the budget yet. Commissioner Hoekstra has a clear mandate in his mission letter on this.

The 2040 #climate law proposal is finally out!

It's the smart economic and security choice in turbulent geopolitical times,as confirmed by
@wopkehoekstra.ec.europa.eu.

What a journey so far and "crunch time" only starts now to get agreement on 18 September.

In an era where multilateralism is under pressure, the EU must redefine its global role.
The next 5 years are critical for Europe to step up on #climate, diplomacy, and economic cooperation.
Short 🧵on what our new @strategiceu.bsky.social report recommends. ⬇️

Commissioner Jørgensen highlight the progress on #renewables: we're setting new records every year, are reducing our fossil fuel import dependency and saving billions like this.
This also helps our energy security and cutting emissions.

More needs to be done on energy efficiency and savings though.
May 28, 2025 at 6:55 AM
@wopkehoekstra.ec.europa.eu is pointing out that decoupling emission reductions and growth is already working in Europe. Emissions were down 37% in 2023 while GDP grew 68% which is a success story.

Plans are much better than 2 years ago.

The next step is clearly to set out a 2040 climate target.
May 28, 2025 at 6:55 AM
EVP @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu highlights that the progress is reassuring and shows that the #GreenDeal laws are working.
Now further implementation is needed to actually achieve these plans and accelerate the decarbonisation with a just transition to provide good jobs for workers.
May 28, 2025 at 6:55 AM
Good news: EU capitals are planning to reach the #climate target of 55% by 2030.

The aggregate of the 27 national plans get us to 54% according to the Commission.

These findings cut through the political noise of a 'backlash' and reveal a more consistent reality of progress.

It was great speaking about EU 2040 #climate goal and the German position in Berlin yesterday.

My main points:
1) Important to agree 2040 target and NDC before the summer to encourage #China to have their NDC ready before the EU-China summit end of July.
2) International cooperation key ...

Good highlights:
- Immediate action on spot gas and concrete action to meet the 2027 deadline,
- More transparency on contracts, starting with Russia but expanding to other countries,
- Clear recognition EU has 2x more LNG infrastructure than needed and no new dependencies should be created.
May 6, 2025 at 2:13 PM
The EU finally published the long overdue plan to phase out Russian #gas.
Every barrel of oil and shipment of LNG from Russia continue to finance a war and pose an immense security risk to Europe.

@vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu has strong lines on #energysecurity at the UK-IEA summit:
- Russia blackmailed EU and weaponised gas,
- renewables best way for strengthening energy security,
BUT mentions “strategic importance” of LNG without saying need is very short term to substitute Russian gas

The #CleanIndustrialDeal is out.

It has the potential to be powerful and transformational, making the EU more competitive - if financial flows will be consistent and legal certainty is provided on the 90% target in the climate law.

The good, the bad, the ugly in a 🧵

So here it is, the preliminary result of the #GermanElections.

With FDP & BSW missing the 5% threshold, a “grand coalition” with CDU and SPD becomes most likely new government. 2-party coalition also “fast” to negotiate.

Note: for reform of debt break they need 2/3, so Greens and the Left.

As we only know later tonight which options for German coalition, let's look at what's ahead:

With a CDU-led government, the tone will change but the challenges remain the same. German industry is most exposed to high energy prices, competition from China and tariffs from the US.

Here are the options for majorities depending on FDP and BSW in or out:
February 23, 2025 at 5:53 PM
First exit polls for #GermanElections - all roughly as expected:

AfD made substantial gains, but centre held and the Left is the biggest surprise.

Likely coalitions remain "grand coalition" and "Kenya" (CDU, SPD, Greens) - but only later tonight we know seat distribution & how many parties are in.
February 23, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Whilst polls have changed significantly over the last years, they are now pretty much where they have been a year ago - with the exception of the Left party.

The #CDU is expected to win with a significant margin, the exact outcome determines the ruling coalition.

Important reminder by Draghi in the @financialtimes.com that overcoming internal barriers in the Single Market must be a priority for the upcoming #CleanIndustrialDeal.

Even if apparently unpopular with Commission, enforcement of current policies is key.

Exciting! We got it black on white that on European level, competitiveness and achieving a 90% climate goal by 2040 "go hand in hand". Strong signal for #cleantech manufacturing in EU.

This allows the EU to adopt its 2040 & 2035 targets for NDC in June.

Credit where credit is due: absolutely fantastic train conductor on #ICE11 from Brussels to Cologne this morning!

He empathetically and anxiously kept us up to date if (and secretly ensured) we would make our connection to Berlin! Thx #Bahn!

Waking up at 5am was worth it ;)
February 12, 2025 at 7:40 AM
It's out! The new EU flagship framing for the next 5 years is a compass for #competitiveness.

This is a first step towards turning the EU in an even more appealing and innovative business location. Von der Leyen emphasises "speed and unity" being key.
