Aspiring bog witch. Perpetually embarrassed. Partially to blame for a podcast about Final Fantasy of all things @finalfancast.bsky.social
well you're one of my fav skeeters and before that you were one of my fav twitter accounts which may not seem super impressive compared with winning a nobel prize or publishing a novel but there's a fuckton of competition so I hope you can allow yourself to feel at least a little good about that

Who do you think you're talking to?

In this economy? I can spot you some cortisol if that helps.

This is a slippery slope straight to Tin Woodsman

I love Mars having genuine occult abilities. That's just rad, plus it adds an additional touch of spookiness that works really well with everything else.

So far we've got Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter in the supporting cast. I like Mercury and Mars but Jupiter seems like a more fleshed out character. I suspect she's going to work more like a secondary lead with the relatively one-note Mercury and Mars taking more of a back seat.

There's something very powerful and intense for me in this, the idea that something sinister is lurking behind these apparently mundane things and none of the adults are aware. I guess that's something I felt as a kid.

Much of the early stories are about the seemingly innocuous and mundane elements of this otherwise normal girl's life hiding something nefarious. A mall perfume shop is secretly a plot to steal your life energy. An after-school program is actually run by a monster.

One thing I've been really tripping on is the incongruity between story, setting, and tone. Because the stories have been pretty simple so far, although they seem to get a little more complex around when Sailor Jupiter is introduced.

Autobiographical preamble out of the way... I'm really fascinated by this show. Currently finishing up the 1st season. Which, damn, seasons used to be way longer. I'm going to be the old person rattling on about how "when I was a kid seasons used to be 40+ episodes long."

Which is to say, I'm making up for lost time now. There's something affirming and joyful about just watching the show. I'm even watching an early dub to get the full 90s kid experience, although I have the subs on as well and those seem more accurate translations. The differences are interesting.

I grew up in a high control household where gender roles were a big deal, so at that point in my life, I knew I was very much expected to avoid "girl shows" or else face questioning. (I didn't know that when I was a younger child, though, so I saw a lot of early My Little Pony and stuff like that.)

Sailor Moon aired on Toonami when I was watching DBZ in my childhood/early adolescence, though I never saw very much of it. Because gender roles.

@breadprogram.bsky.social Mike, did you know that when Maddy Morphosis is defeated in battle, her downed sprite is just a giant wig on the floor?

It always gets me how the equation has those jiggle lines around it as if the numbers are barely being contained, just vibrating with all this explosive potential energy. It's what really makes the visual part of the gag work for me. Jiggle lines.

They said it couldn't be done. They said "why would you even want to do that?" Finally, thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team of bakers, the HMS Crumblecrust set out on its maiden voyage. Though the voyage was brief due to sudden and unforeseeable sinkification, we proved all the haters wrong.
