An amazing weekend of music at Skaņu Mežs - the best experimental music festival in the Baltics. Highlights included Harpy (pictured), These New Puritans, and Shabaka Hutchins with Hamid Drake. Such a breadth of music was covered!

Went on a little 52km hike the other weekend. Two days with friends and a lovely dog, camping in hammock, writing odd poetry, and getting annoyed at wooden stairs.

Same view every week on the way to the sauna. Preparing for a 50km hike that I will do at the weekend. First time hammock sleeping and probably my last chance of the year before the weather turns colder. So much cultural activity in Rīga atm, the city is rich and vibrant.

Went on a nice little 17km hike and met two slow worms, plus a mole cricket. This one let me photograph them, the other slithered away abruptly.

Where years of accumulated posters form archeological layers of cultural information. The best bar in Rīga: Bolderaja.

Back here again after a few months away. You can’t beat sitting in a sauna whilst watching gorgeous sunset. For me it is a mental health reset.

The Gauja river is quite high for this time of year due to all the rain we’ve had. I’ve done this hike many times over the last few years, in nearly all the seasons and it never fails to move me.

Dusk on the beach somewhere North West of Rīga, camping down for a night under the stars after a day of hiking.
Woke up at 3am with a frog on my face. It didn’t seem too bothered about it.

There has been a fantastic run of gigs at one of my favourite, intimate Rīga venues recently. This was EIII who I interviewed for the Liminal Noise radio show in May. He played along with Jurijs Santalovs.
Check out EIII’s new album on @opaltapes.bsky.social

Last weekend was Pride in Rīga, a month of events finishing in 8,000 people taking to the streets and some awesome parties through to sometime the next afternoon…
The protestors were the same twelve bland, fools dressed in beige with placards as tired as their message. Here’s to another year!

But it was more about the art on the inside.

Yesterday was the start of the Process festival in Rīga, run by the Baltic Analog lab, it is a love letter to analog film, showcasing people who go through the BAL workshops and international guests. Next door Aiden Baker’s new band Tavare played, which I managed to catch. Spring in Rīga is busy!

Within a week Rīga has gone from a misery of an early Spring to Summer with 31 degree temperatures. Loved this misty morning. In every light it is a beautiful city.

We went to Tallinn Music Week to play on the Cindy & Kate stage. Fun was had, but the sound was frickin’ awful. Saw Oil X Gas, who were pretty awesome, and the UK band Arch Femmesis. Typically, with a trip to Tallinn, we all got sick. Perhaps it was having an interview in the snow that did it…

I didn’t even plan on going out last weekend, but at some point I ended up in my favourite bookstore / bar buying a book at 00:18. I believe I rolled home at 5am from a completely different end of Rīga. Sunday was a right-off, apart from watching Mobile Suit Gundam I.

A week of band rehearsals, Latvian music awards, finishing with a feminist March through Rīga. Tired now, but somehow I found the energy to drink beer in my favourite bar, despite falling asleep on the sofa with one of my parrots a few hours ago.

Went to Vilnius to see the exhibition on the legendary 80’s Latvian art group N.S.R.D. It filled a few gaps in my knowledge. I also got to hang with guitar-slinger extraordinaire Algis Fediajevas for a long conversation into the small hours. On Sunday, it felt like Spring was in the air.

Well, Tuesday’s gig went well. I had a good time with @eleonorakampe.bsky.social at Aleponija. Hopefully, we will have a split cassette out later this year with the French musician Lunt ( @gillesdelesvelins.bsky.social ).

Coming up in Rīga on the 18th Feb, the improv duo Road to Saturn (myself and avant-vocalist @eleonorakampe.bsky.social) will be playing at Aleponija at 21.00! Two sets of weird and wonderful sounds.

Winter hiking near Garupe. My third trip of the year in this area and I’m still finding new things, like this stream between two dune ridges. Seems there will be a new Lost Harbours (my psyche folk project) album out when I can figure out the art work for it. Looking for inspiration.

So much hiking recently - 70km plus in three days, two of which had snow covered trails. The sea raged in Carnikava on Sunday, after a huge storm dropped 70mm of snow. So, I was glad for Monday’s sauna and the ice clad dip into the Daugava. Getting out was a little hairy though…

Yesterday’s hike took an interesting turn. The ice wasn’t quite strong enough to support my weight. I got a third of the way across the wooden beam before it became apparent the next section was an ice rink. Seems I need studded boots. The realities of winter hiking.

Twenty-one kilometre hike in the snow today. There was a good snowfall last night, but it wasn’t so bad on the Western side of Latvia. Time for a hot bath.
