Nipped to Alness on Friday for some screws (top High Street BTW with two hardware shops) and parked behind the funeral parlour. It's not like lime finishes are hard to find #DrivebyArchaeology #Heritage #LimeFinishes #Conservation #Lime #LimeMortar

I’ve got Covid but I’m in good hands.

I think this is one of the most poignant photographs I have taken, an abandoned cottage on Benbecula deliquescing back into the landscape, while the bottles of a ruined life glint savagely on a bright cold day. c.1999.

@bsky.app Groined ceiling at Fort George, Inverness with traces of limewash.

I was thinking about how much joy this gave me as child.

I love the timelessness of covering buildings and people unable to resist throwing snowballs. A detail from the Cycle of Months, Eagle Tower, Castelo del Buoconsiglio, Trento. Maestro Venceslao, c1405 –1410. Our thanks to Vrinda Jariwala , Vivienne Whyte , Sarah Mayfield for their LFG talks.

We fell out - ran off in the woods this morning.

This is just perfect, tiles bedded in a thick lime plaster and at ground level, where there are likely to be salts, a thick coarse plaster which has been lined out. Guimaraes, Portugal.

More from Guimarães - I mean phwoar! Strange and intimidating delivering an interdisciplinary paper to a wholly scientific audience, but I enjoyed the feedback.

Went looking for a local beer in Guimarães and got lost but found this on the route back. They make so much sense in this climate.

Top decorative windows. Sad dereliction.

Arrived in Guimaraes in Portugal to give our paper. The tiles are set in a really thick coat of lime plaster. If your going to god stuff at least do it with panache.

Porto just now.

Heading out to Guimarães in Portugal to present our paper on pressure difference and the positive impact of complete lime finishes and have been told I need to smarten myself up and do @curatorkate.bsky.social and I credit. #Heritage #LimeMortar #ClimateChange #LimeFinishes

I love the way they get so completely zonked out at this age

One of those days when I managed to combine the two essentials of any journey, scones and some top lime pointing, in this case a nicely detailed raised ribbon at the River Bothy at the bottom of the Berridale Braes, Caithness and Sutherland.
October 16, 2025 at 8:55 AM
Top lined out lime pointing and a wee ghost sign thrown in for good measure in Wick. Thanks to @lillyh.bsky.social for showing me around this languishing but great town with 💯potential.
