Really proud of the progress our Year 7s have made with reading this year! In September only 37% were at or above their reading age compared with 75% now. Short thread below on how we have achieved this. 🧵

At Reach Academy Hanworth Park, pupils in Y7 read the same book at home each half term as part of our reading programme. Our pupils love discussing characters/plot/predictions with their peers in our weekly English Morning Meets. Short thread on how we do this. 🧵

Feeling excited for Y7 to read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’engle as part of our reading scheme. I thoroughly recommend this book for introducing pupils to science fiction - a thrilling adventure set in space 🔭🪐🛰️ #Edusky

3. We discuss the text pupils are reading at home. Year 7 are currently all reading Island at the End of Everything by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. Pupils make predictions together and recall key parts of the story.

Excited for pupils to read this wonderful book as part of our reading scheme at Reach Academy Hanworth Park. Many pupils seem to fall out of love with reading as they start secondary school. See our blog below for what we do with our Year 7s to combat this. 📚📖 #EduSky

Loving using these books as a starting point for an English unit on writing for change. Excited to talk to pupils about education, migration and activism. #EduSky

Over half term, I asked Year 7 to respond (in any way they liked) to Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. The result was beautiful: models, paintings, poems, essays, short films. Reading great books inspires pupils to create - giving them the freedom to make something completely new is joyous. #EduSky

Loved Reading Lessons by Carol Atherton - a thoughtful read for any English teacher. A reminder that the books children read can change the way they see the world. Thank you @juliryzop.bsky.social for the recommendation! #EduSky
