Amid the roiling chaos of the world, I took some time out last night to go and see Swedish rockers The Hives at The Enmore in Sydney. Out the hundreds of gigs I’ve been to over the years, this was top 5 for sure. I haven’t felt so good in ages. Rock on. 🤘
The crowd surged below the stage. The five-piece band is wearing matching black suits with white piping and untied cravats. They are spread out over the stage, playing guitars and drums while the lead singer lets loose on vocals. Over their heads are five lanterns, each with a black letter. They spell HIVES. Lead singer, Pelle, stands atop a fold back speaker tipped on its side. He is singing to the masses crowd, one fist raised in the air. Behind him the bass player and drummer are using their whole bodies to drive maximum sound from their instruments. Spotlights throw yellow-green light, bouncing shadows through haze generated by a smoke machine.

There’s a Tesla Owners Club in Australia, offering support for Tesla owners. This seemed to be the only appropriate response.

Happy 2025! Am in south New South Wales, road tripping my way from Canberra to the Clare Valley for a writing retreat. Not a bad way to start what’s going to be yet another “interesting” year.

Climate change is giving us another hot, wet summer in the national capital. The upside? Spectacular cloud stacks over #NgunnawalCountry, instead of the high, wispy clouds we’re used to.

Spotted these beauties while out at Uni of Canberra with no1 son, who starts a psychology undergrad in Feb 🤩
The top two thirds of the photo shows high-stacked cumulus clouds against a sapphire sky. Beneath the clouds is a run of eucalyptus, cast dark under the midday sun. The bottom third of the photo is a verdant swathe of sports-oval turf. Nature cares not for human shenanigans.

Took the family to the Australian National Botanical Gardens today for a guided ”Pride in the Gardens” walk, part of the ACT’s SpringOUT festival.

We learned from our volunteer guide about the many different sexual characteristics of plants, including how they can change gender.

The Big Prawn at Ballina. Adjacent to a Bunnings mega hardware store. So random, much wow.

For some bizarre reason, coastal towns on Australia’s east coast like to have a giant-sized food item as their unique selling point. In Ballina, on NSW’s north coast, they have a big prawn. It’s gigantic, held up by large steel poles adjacent to the Bunnings car park. Looks like it’s been cooked with its tail still on. The statue-sculpture-big-thing is lifelike, down to the eyes, antennae and tiny feet. It’s orange. It’s weird.

Two poodle cross dogs in the park. The larger dog is a blond groodle and she is looking at the camera. The smaller dog is a white and black cavoodle and she is not looking at the camera. The groodle is in the drop position; the cavoodle is sitting. The same dogs, in the same position, but this time the groodle is looking away and the cavoodle is looking at the camera. Both are happy with big doggie smiles.
