Christian (ELCA)
🪡 He goes as far as to say - what is far worse than lowly thieves is the arch thieves, whom had kept company with lords and princes and plundered the wealth of cities under the protection of and coordinated by the papacy.

🪡Luther places great emphasis in general within this section, exclaiming the importance of fair market activity. Going as far as to call those [workmen, mechanics, and day-laborers] who cheat in the market buy over charging "far worse than sneak-thieves."

🪡In the section of the Large Catechism "Thou shalt not steal." Luther goes as far to say of God: "Him who takes care of the poor sorrowful hearts, and will not allow them to go unavenged" in regards to the overcharging of the poor, when we ought to "give [to] for nothing".

🪡The other time this is mentioned in the 95 theses is regarding the pope - "Why does not the pope, whose wealth is to-day greater than the riches of the richest, build just this one church of St. Peter with his own money, rather than with the money of poor believers?" (86th thesis)

🪡There are two other times this issue is mentioned in the 95 theses; one other time where he exclaims the primacy of helping the poor over buying indulgences: "Christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better work than buying pardons" (43rd thesis)

🧵The relationship between Lutheranism and economic justice needs more focus: "Christians are to be taught that he who sees a man in need, and passes him by, and gives [his money] for pardons, purchases not the indulgences of the pope, but the indignation of God" (45th - 95 Theses)

Actually people do argue for separation between men and women by using biological essentialism. The author of the article ignores how these arguments are identical to the ones used by transphobic people.

🪡Now, we see a tie in to the 9th, and 10th commandment. When one sees their neighbor and envy's them for their possessions, they are overcome by wrath. Thus, "God [..] steps in ahead of us, interposes and wishes to have the quarrel settled, that no misfortune come of it, nor one destroy another."

🪡Luther, in the next paragraph justifies this using Matthew 25:42 "For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink.." Subsequently explaining this applies "especially to our enemies" as we must show all "good and love."

🪡 We must not only avoid inciting ill will against others, but - "if you see one suffer hunger and do not give him food, you have caused him to starve." You are responsible for saving, protecting, and defending others as well by this commandment.

🧵When we think of the 5th commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill," Luther reminds us that it is not merely the act in and of itself which is forbidden; but also, that we must act such "that the heart be not ill disposed toward anyone," in a manner which could potentially lead to violence. #Lutheran #elca

🪡We find, in my opinion why we come to unburned consciousness through accepting our forgiveness of sins through faith in the Lords prayer. "forgive us our trespasses as we for give those who trespass against us." By Christ accepting us, we learn that we *can,* forgive and accept others, and must.

🪡Now, when we instead place the true God at the center of our conscience, and accept through faith forgiveness of sins through Christ: "We begin also to love our neighbors, because our hearts have spiritual and holy movements" (Defense of the Augsburg confession)
November 26, 2024 at 6:23 AM
🪡Luther then reminds us: "For this reason He wishes to turn us away from everything else that exists outside of Him, and to draw us to Himself, namely, because He is the only eternal good." When we place our self worth in money, we turn away from God, who has given us all comfort and assurances.

🪡By believing God grants us material success, we actually are being deceived by the false idol of money. You can tell by how someone response to their financial success. Are they joyful, proud, and presumptuous when they have it, sad and dismayed in lack? If so, they aren't following the true God.

🪡This paragraph in the Catechism comes from the subsection on the first commandment (Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.) Where Luther explains ones God, is "means that from which we are to expect all good and to which we are to take refuge in all distress."

🧵Luther (Large Catechism, The Ten Commandments.) explains that no happiness can be lasting or meaningful in the worship of money and material success, and that within generations it will not last. It is important to ground ourselves, not in materialism but in a higher ideal. #Lutheran

I like your article — and learned a lot about the history about Christ the King day. I think there was a typo however. But don’t know if it was intentional.

Thank you so much for your reply. I actually have been contemplating a specific part of the Large Catechism that deals with this issue as well that might provide some reflection. It seems like Luther believes in limitations on Christian responsibility to obey the State in the case of tyrants.
