Wanna know what's there now? FREE parking. Meaning the city is making $0 on that space, and neither is Savoy. Using spaces like these for people instead of cars should not cost businesses more! SB needs parking reform desperately.

Also! If you do unfortunately have your bike stolen or know someone who does, report it on bikemaps.org! Researchers like us here at UCSB use this data to improve safe biking 😊
BikeMaps
Map your cycling incidents, hazard, and theft locations so they can be analyzed to identify hot spots of cycling safety, risk, and crime.

Long story short, businesses, talk to bike folks before you spend a lot of money on a rack that people won't want to use! And cities, help us advocate for safe bike storage options! Bike link lockers like the ones in the Bay Area are a great example. 6/

Finally, an example of a great bike rack, at Trader Joe's in Goleta. The shape allows bikes of all different sizes and shapes to lock safely to the frame and wheel, with lots of space for two bikes to share each rack. 5/

These racks at Albertsons require a lot of creativity to lock safely, especially with a heavy ebike. 4/

The Goleta library has 3 poor examples. The concrete slats on the left were the first attempt (designed by someone I can only assume has never locked up a bike or maybe ever seen a bike??). Then the metal and plastic racks are oddly-shaped and difficult to lock safely to. 3/

This rack at the farmer's market is not only impossible to lock safely to, but it's also too narrow for many ebike tires. 2/
