Mixed methods social science researcher; author; journalist when I have something to say. Cultural creative; reader; TED Talk on women veterans and homelessness. Chapters in Routledge, Oxford University Press, and Springer Nature. Married to @rjhphd.
My neighbors are fostering pups whose mom is a Great Pyrenees, which prolly makes me think of that. They’re kinda pyrfect for the job.

I am spending Memorial Day weekend focused/speedily writing an article with @rjhphd for a journal special issue on aging veterans. While thinking with reverence of those who never lived to be. #Respect #MemorialDay

Was VERY surprised by the low quality — in multiple places — of an IKEA bookcase I put together last night. Have bought IKEA products for at least 20 years and never had an issue b4. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@fpwellman.bsky.social Fred, five years ago total. Feels like multiple lifetimes ago, to be sure!

I wish I had seen this earlier.

Here’s an example of one of the photo transfer concept. A friend of mine had died really young and I borrowed a bunch of photos from her family and put them all together and sort of a collage of the cycle of her life. And picked fabrics she would’ve liked. It was very moving to work on.

I’m glad I bought this bumper sticker but now there are just too many places to post it. I went through social work grad school, as ironic as that might be, during the first Trump administration. But this one is so much worse, intentionally so. So much cruelty and chaos and that’s the game plan! 🤮

We still have just one #hummingbird visiting our feeder every day, several times a day. It seems to be getting thinner by the day. Sad to think there’s no way it’s gonna survive this coming 🥶 snap.

Happy Sunday!

My late dad did the most beautiful cartoon of the late, great #JimmyCarter back in the day. I have always loved it because it captured his #HabitatForHumanity phase, which so encapsulated so much of what was wonderful about him.

Thought for the Day.

It was great to get a copy of this the other day, where I’m published as a chapter co-author on why you’d bother taking academic research and writing newspaper Op-Eds about it, to inform the general public. Good times :-).

And in the process we found some kick-ass migration maps done by someone named Minard (French) in 1858, and they really give you a lot to think about. Good stuff. I'm still craving larb and want to see a good migration map about the Hmong ending up in Minnesota from Laos and previously from China.

Yesterday would have been my 500th day straight #reading, less 2 missed days on #Kindle. This year, about 140 books 📚 so far including paperbacks and audiobooks listened to while commuting. #Libraries

I hope #UPS isn't planning to stand behind this "proof of delivery" photo because -- it sucks -- and, of course it isn't even our door. The plot thickens. I'm on minute umpteen of waiting for their callback about this.

I think this is the first year I will make German Christmas stollen in a longish while. Got the recipe from my high school best friend‘s mom who is German. She got tired of my asking for it every year so I ended up promising to keep a copy somewhere safe. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️❤️

While the NYT cooking app’s roasted duck with cherries was pretty ho-hum, the ensuing duck stock made a great base for the Thai hot and sour shrimp soup tonight. (All the grainy, tasty, flavor-conferring things had already been strained out when this pic was taken.) Body temperature at 💯. 🤣🤣😋

The old Yankee Magazine Cookbook recipe for Apple 🍏 Oatmeal Crisp did not (never) disappoint(s). Made an equally fab brekkie, reheated.

I labored over a duck dish yesterday for Thanksgiving — NYT Cooking app — and it was just “meh” despite lots of tedious, nay, fussy effort. Made duck stock too. May turn it into Thai soup.

This is my artist dad, well b4 I ever knew him, also by the same portrait painter, Harold Irving Smith, who as I knew about him, wasn’t “in” the Ashcan School, but was in the 2nd generation of artists who came out of that school. And randomly, it does of course capture a bit of my dad.

My brother sent me this pic of moi as a toddler, which is remarkable in its own right. Painted by a semi-famous American painter, who my artist dad apprenticed with. But then…
