who was responsible for devising and approving the budets from which the Ergon House funds were drawn and were they aware that the funds were being used for this puropse? Who was responsible for creating the bespoke budgetry instruments used in conducting the Ergon House scheme? Were any individuals responsible for establishing or vouching for the acuracy of the budgetary instruments used in the scheme and did they do so know that they were established outwith the party's normal stuctures? Precisely how much was diverted and on what dates was divered and on what dates from the Labour Party's budget to the Ergon House scheme? Did any participant in the Ergon House scheme knowlingly create or file misleading or false accounting records that had the effect of misleading the Labour Party as to the expenditure of funds belonging to the party? If so, did the Labour Party unwittingly make materially misleading disclosures to the Electoral Commission as to the use of funds it was entitled to spend? To whose benefit were the Egon House funds directed and were any of these recipients aware that the campaigning funds were being directed to them through the Ergon House scheme? Additionally, were any of the beneficiaries of the Ergon House scheme, or their staff aware that the Ergon House shceme was clandestinely conceived and executed?

I posted in jest, then read this on Labourlist. 😳
However, one Labour minister is reported to have said they are “certain” that Streeting has been gathering support for a potential leadership bid, claiming he was “actively plotting by phoning ministers and backbenchers”. One claim reported last night suggested that the Health Secretary had contacted as many as 50 ministers and asked them to resign from the government if he challenged the Prime Minister. Fears over plotting were heightened later last night after a ‘Wes for Leader’ website was registered online. However, a spokesman for the health secretary has denied any involvement, telling The Telegraph: “It is categorically nothing to do with anyone around Wes. Someone’s mischief-making again.”

The government creates it, then taxes some back. Tax has other purposes than paying for government spending, eg to change behaviour (alcohol, tobacco), to control inflation or redistribute wealth. #MMT
First, the UK government really does create money, and does so every single day. It does so through the Bank of England, which is wholly owned by the UK state. That means the Bank is not some external entity, nor is it independent in the sense that a private actor is. It is, by law and by design, an agent of government policy — even if it pretends otherwise. When the government spends, the Treasury instructs the Bank of England to mark up the bank accounts of whoever is being paid. That creates new money. No taxpayer's cash is “sitting there” waiting to be used. The government's spending comes first, and then the money is created, quite literally, by the accounting entries that follow from that instruction to pay.

In a letter sent to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform’s Nigel Farage today, Davey said “it should not be up to foreign powers to dictate where the British people get their news from”. “The BBC belongs to Britain, not Trump. We must defend it together,” says Davey.

A government subsidy would go a long way here but the real problem is infrastructure. That infrastructure has been paid for by water customers already but not built. OFWAT have already confirmed this. The companies involved paid dividends with the money instead and *now* want us to pay again.

I agree, the revolving doors of corporations to government and back again. It's not just the finance sector where this happens but until recently was the most noticeable. I believe it fits the definition of state capture (from Wikipedia)

Recent local experience says Your Party were willing to talk and come to an agreement, but a former Geen councilor with an ego had better ideas. It worked well.

A large chunk of government debt is owed to the BoE, so it owes money to itself, as a currency issuing country the UK can always cover its"debts". We're being sold neoliberalism like there is no alternative. There is, it's an ideological choice.

The Economist also failed to notice that around a quarter of all UK government debt is owned by the government. So  the true level of debt is not 95% of GDP, but something only a bit over 70% of GDP. But why let facts get in the way of a good story when you're trying to knock the country where your magazine is based? There are lots of other things they ignored as well. For example,  they ignored the fact that the UK issues its own currency, so it cannot run out of money, and yet they implied it could. They  even drew a comparison with 1976 when the then UK Chancellor, Denis Healey - I remember him well - was forced to go to the International Monetary Fund and ask for a loan to deal with the UK's debts, which were then denominated in dollars.

The conclusion is simple. When Reeves says there is “nothing progressive” about spending on debt interest, she implies she has no choice but to accept the bill as it stands. That is wrong. She does have a choice. She could cut the bill by tens of billions without harming public services, without raising taxes on ordinary people, and without resorting to austerity. If she refuses to use the tools available, it is not because there is no alternative. It is because she has chosen to prioritise the interests of the City of London and the banks over those of the NHS, schools, and care. That is not progress. That is not what Labour should be about. And it is not good economics. But Revees is choosing it. Why is that?

In Rachel's world it's possible to be racist without being racist.
Reeves says people can support racist policy without being racist, in reference to PM's comment about Reform UK Ferrari asks about what Keir Starmer said yesterday about Reform UK’s plan to end indefinite leave to remain being racist. Q: Does supporting that policy make someone racist? No, says Reeves. Q: So you can support a racist policy but not be racist. Reeves says it is a racist policy. Q: But how can you support a racist policy and not be racist? Reeves says people support Reform UK for all sorts of reasons. Ferrari says he does not see how you can support a racist policy and not be racist. Reeves says she is not sure lots of people do support this policy. She says: I think there are lots of people who back Reform would be horrified by the thought that people who came to this country legally, are working and contributing, will be deported from this country. And we had to call out Reform for their policies. And this is a racist policy, and it’s a bad for our country, and we need to call that out.
