Would be interested to know whether those who do this don’t usually hear an inner voice when they read. I don’t think I could bear it, because I can’t read without ‘hearing’ the words in my head, and the two voices would inevitably clash.

It doesn’t and can’t ‘look things up.’ The gen in genAI means that it generates the most likely token in any given context. So if texts that talk about tide times usually give a time in the format 00:00, it’ll generate a plausible-looking time in that format.

Right. And plenty of us would rather give up the convenience of their various potential uses in favour of the govt not having a list of who we all are. My ancestors escaped the pogroms to come here; we became an invisible minority and we’d like to stay invisible thank you very much.
