It’s clear people have a a vague understanding of what a mammy is but don’t actually know what it means. They see aspects of the stereotype and use that to flatten her character and ignore the depth that she was actually given

It’s super annoying because by definition, she cannot be a mammy. Mammies have to be seen as asexual or deemed less desirable by the narrative and Annie gets a love confession AND a sex scene within 10 minutes of being on screen. And Smokes love for her is consistent throughout the entire film
