Clearly never with Trump and the current media that isn’t about journalism but instead ratings and profit. I don’t see how you imagine any of them care about the profession anymore.

Thank you chairman Powell for your commitment to continue to do the right thing.

Making this statement doesn’t do anything to reduce the blame he has for it.

What a great and informative graphic!

He didn’t agree with it. He would have rather had prices follow free market. Do you think that would be good for low income people that pay very little in taxes toward those subsidies but do have to pay for their groceries? Did you ever think about that? Do you understand tax codes?

I grow up on a family dairy farm. My dad always believed that subsidies were designed to keep food/milk prices down because if unprofitable farmers went out of business, low supply would spike prices. Many farmers stayed “alive” via subsidies but that didn’t make them rich. Cheap food was/is goal.

It took Canada from the 1950s to 1984 to fully phase in universal healthcare. So yeah, it’s all just the American mindset that’s the issue in discussing what a real transition would look like.
December 27, 2025 at 7:18 PM
This is the simplistic commentary I was talking about. Cite the study that $11k per person covers care for all. Most payers are rarely patients, just using routine care. Docs and hospitals often lose money on Medicare payments, how will that be fixed? What transition? Looking for serious info.
December 27, 2025 at 6:29 PM
Please share if there is any thought out plan being developed by some group. It’s so easy to yell “universal healthcare” but much harder to have a real discussion on how to fix our system and what any transition will mean for patients, providers, and payers.

FYI, he is not a democrat.
December 20, 2025 at 3:08 AM
That may be what he wants, but he knows he won’t get it and is willing to sacrifice those kids. And I’m not happy to say this.
December 20, 2025 at 3:07 AM
Ah wait, how about kids cancer? Clearly not a concern. Must be nice to put aside morality for the game. God I wish there were a few good men, and I say that because so few women are part of the legislative branch.

Have to say that most of us with busy lives didn’t know he was speaking tonight, wouldn’t have watched if we had the time, don’t give a shit about the bs he spewed, and live in the real world where prices don’t come down 300-500 percent. What an idiot. It’s so unreal that he is president - again!

Got my Atlantic subscription as a birthday present 2 years ago. I so appreciate the writing, even if sometimes I disagree with conclusions. I always find your writing interesting and informative.

That’s a bummer. I have really appreciated hearing your perspective.

To be a little bit fair here. It’s unlikely she would have been the nominee if Biden had bowed out like he said he would and there was a real primary process. Inflation made the admin unpopular and she couldn’t run away from that in 3 months! I think she did run a good campaign with all that.

And even more to the point, the people who were getting hosed by the shutdown and who will be hurt by Rs policies are the EXACT people Ds have lost. Failure on so many fronts. And unfortunately Durbin is my Senator. There was no pressure for him to do this other than whatever he will personally get.
November 11, 2025 at 2:53 AM
Love you Tim but they got absolutely nothing. Rs “promising” a vote on ACA is bullshit. If Ds didn’t care about any concessions, they should have just let the CR pass originally and let Rs own what happened without hurting so many people. Total failure.
